today in mastodon's amazing unrequested tech support: after I complained about how my ZSH was doing bad tab-completion, and 21 hours after I fixed it, someone showed up to link me to a video (!) of how tab completion works in general (!!) in Bash (!!!), a completely different shell (!!!!)

I think this is a really good example of the problem with the word "artist", and where the creativity vs artistry/vision vs craftsmanship lens can be useful people who agree with the sentiment here (myself included) heavily value craftsmanship - skipping over the craft defeats the purpose but,

So I find staying on top of e-mail IMPOSSIBLE. IMPOSSIBLE! How do you all manage it? How do you sort out the stuff you need to reply to or take action on in the future, and not lose it or forget about it? How do you keep e-mail from being 90% of your workday if that is not really your "job"?

How do computers calculate complicated trig functions such as tangent? I took a look at Intel's 8087 floating-point chip under the microscope to find out. The chip combines two techniques to evaluate the tan function quickly and accurately: polynomials and an algorithm called CORDIC...
A die photo of the 8087 chip under a microscope shows complex patterns from its transistors and wiring. The middle of the chip holds the microcode ROM, while the bottom half of the chip is the datapath that performs calculations. Zooming in on the datapath shows various functional blocks, which appear as rectangles with different textures. Important functional blocks are labeled: exponent ROM, constant ROM, shifter, adder, registers, and so forth.

Not everybody knows this, and everybody should. On Sept. 26, 1983, a Soviet nuclear warning system alerted Stanislav Yevgrafovich Petrov that the U.S. had launched a missile attack. He did not retaliate, preventing WWIII. This is a post about AI. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanisl...

Discworld QOTD, from Guards! Guards!
They may be called the Palace Guard, the City Guard, or the Patrol. Whatever the name, their purpose in any work of heroic fantasy is identical: it is, round about Chapter Three (or ten minutes into the film) to rush into the room, attack the hero one at a time, and be slaughtered. No one ever asks them if they want to.

This book is dedicated to those fine men.

Discworld QOTD, from Making Money
“Well, er, I may have a few ideas,” said Moist. “But it’s all still a bit of a shock. I don’t really understand how banks work.”
“You’ve never put money in a bank?”
“Not in, no.”
“How do you think they work?”
“Well, you take rich people’s money and lend it to suitable people at interest, and give as little as possible of the interest back.”
“Yes, and what is a suitable person?”
“Someone who can prove they don’t need the money?”
“Oh, you cynic. But you have got the general idea.”
