Le Guin on the idea that there is a secret to getting good at writing.

I will dispose of the first myth as quickly as possible. The “secret” is skill. If you haven’t learned how to do something, the people who have may seem to be magicians, possessors of mysterious secrets. In a fairly simple art, such as making pie crust, there are certain teachable “secrets” of method that lead almost infallibly to good results; but in any complex art, such as housekeeping, piano-playing, clothes-making, or story-writing, there are so many techniques, skills, choices of method, so many variables, so many “secrets,” some teachable and some not, that you can learn them only by methodical, repeated, long-continued practice — in other words, by work.

SOMETHING on my desk has been making this high pitched noise and I keep getting SO distracted every time I notice it again. Please filter the noise out, brain?? I'm also live right now twitch.tv/adhd_alien/

comic depicting the ADHD Alien character at a desk, looking frustrated and scanning for where a noise is coming from. The desk is full of USB devices, speakers, and two screens. A big, long beep noise sound effect spans across the image.

followup to dream phone design, took some ideas from people I liked. It's not designed for everyone but it's designed for me specifically and I'm mad it doesn't (and will likely never) exist

a sketch design for a smartphone
Has: De-googled OS, 60hrzm 64gb storage, 5 inch display, 1080p, OLED screen, plastic body, bluetooth, widgets, rubber corners, two programmable buttons, single hinge camera that flips up for selfies, removable battery, headphone jack, USBC charging, loop in corner for charms, SD memory slot, and clear plastic back so you can put in your own design or something idk

Does not have: AI, face recognition, turn-on on lift, mandatory updates

Haven's Azem was named Scintilla. They were very close with Venat, Hythlodaeus, and Hades. Having been raised around many of them, Scintilla was on good terms with their coworkers in the Convocation. Scintilla saw Themis as a mentee. #HavenKLore #5.0spoiler Extended lore below

I think G'Raha Tia and Haven would alternate. Both of them have the self-sacrificing type of heroism, especially when the other is involved. It would be a very messed up loop of bringing the other back via their own death.

This is the best product listing copy I’ve ever read

Nothing lasts forever, and that includes the Roman Empire.

The Fall of Rome-Scented Candle smells like cypress trees and red wine. Light it and watch the Roman forum melt into a puddle of wax while you quietly contemplate the impermanence of civilizations and/or candles.

Do you think individual Romans understood that their civilization was collapsing? Or did it happen so gradually that they were able to ignore the warning signs—international trade breaking down, the senate becoming a rubber stamp for the supreme leader, and political violence becoming expected during transfers of power?

It’s hard to say, because it’s impossible to imagine being in that kind of situation. In any event—hope you enjoy the candle!

Haven would run a very authentic travel vlog. It was meant for family and friends so they wouldn't blow up her tombstone and linkshell. Her channel became super popular because she always finds herself in the center of world events. Now she can barely travel unrecognized. She finds it super annoying

Emet-Selch and Haven's Azem were good friends until the End of Days. So an Ascian Azem would try to stay with Emet-Selch after the sundering. Azem would follow Emet-Selch's lead as far as they could. But ultimately, the two would disagree on the way forward and become adversaries. #HavenKLore

Canonically, all of Haven's weapons are ranged, so she does not know hand to hand combat. Usually, she'll scramble for her weapon. But if she is angry, she'll just keep casting. Through some combination of hijinks, it'll work for a short time. The power of her spells will be weak though. #HavenKLore

Haven K @haven-k.etheirys.social · 18/03/2025

Hmmm I think this would be expansion dependent. Her tank form would always be Dark Knight and her healer form would always be Sage. As a DPS, she'd start as Bard, switch to Red Mage in Stormblood, and go back to Bard for Dawntrail. Or maybe in Dawntrail she'd alternate between the two randomly.

Haven K @haven-k.etheirys.social · 14/03/2025

As a trust, Haven would go by Nymeia's Wanderer. She would be a reliable avatar to follow for mechanics unless she was in the melee portion of her rotation. She will playfully fight Alisae and Estinien for LB, encourage Alphinaud and Ryne, and heal G'Raha Tia after he takes damage.

000

Haven K @haven-k.etheirys.social · 14/03/2025

It took aborting a timeline and a century of waiting to get Haven to believe G'Raha Tia loved her. I think that puts Haven in the difficult to believe category. #HavenKLore #5.0spoiler

I shipped Haven with Aymeric for a while. In Stormblood it became obvious that the relationship wouldn't work. They're both workaholics and Haven is always traveling. But more importantly, Haven couldn't consider Ishgard home while Aymeric couldn't disengage from it.
