Le Guin on the idea that there is a secret to getting good at writing.

I will dispose of the first myth as quickly as possible. The “secret” is skill. If you haven’t learned how to do something, the people who have may seem to be magicians, possessors of mysterious secrets. In a fairly simple art, such as making pie crust, there are certain teachable “secrets” of method that lead almost infallibly to good results; but in any complex art, such as housekeeping, piano-playing, clothes-making, or story-writing, there are so many techniques, skills, choices of method, so many variables, so many “secrets,” some teachable and some not, that you can learn them only by methodical, repeated, long-continued practice — in other words, by work.

followup to dream phone design, took some ideas from people I liked. It's not designed for everyone but it's designed for me specifically and I'm mad it doesn't (and will likely never) exist

a sketch design for a smartphone
Has: De-googled OS, 60hrzm 64gb storage, 5 inch display, 1080p, OLED screen, plastic body, bluetooth, widgets, rubber corners, two programmable buttons, single hinge camera that flips up for selfies, removable battery, headphone jack, USBC charging, loop in corner for charms, SD memory slot, and clear plastic back so you can put in your own design or something idk

Does not have: AI, face recognition, turn-on on lift, mandatory updates

As younger members joined the Convocation, Scintilla tried to mentor them. This led to a close friendship with Themis. But they felt guilty for being away so often to fulfill their duties as Azem.

000

Haven K @haven-k.etheirys.social · 07/11/2025

Scintilla 's personality and penchant for mischief made being a member of the Convocation difficult, especially the politics. They were often scolded by older members who still viewed them as Venat's child. Scintilla barely minded as they viewed the older members as relatives.

100

Haven K @haven-k.etheirys.social · 07/11/2025

Once they came of age and graduated, they became Venat's assistant. Due to their familiarity with the Convocation, Scintilla was the natural next choice for the Seat of Azem. They were instrumental in nominating Hythlodaeus for the Seat of Emet-Selch, but fully supported the switch to Hades.

100

Haven K @haven-k.etheirys.social · 07/11/2025

Venat found a young Scintilla during one of her journeys as Azem. She took the child in and raised them as her own, sending them to the best school in Amaurot. It was during their school days that they became close with Hythlodaeus and by extension Hades. They thought Hades was hilariously uptight.

100

Haven K @haven-k.etheirys.social · 07/11/2025

Scintilla had a very open personality. They were known for being witty, blunt, stubborn, generous, and a touch reckless. Scintilla's early life was rife with neglect and deprivation, so they decided to live their life experiencing everything the world had to offer.

100

Haven K @haven-k.etheirys.social · 07/11/2025

Haven's Azem was named Scintilla. They were very close with Venat, Hythlodaeus, and Hades. Having been raised around many of them, Scintilla was on good terms with their coworkers in the Convocation. Scintilla saw Themis as a mentee. #HavenKLore #5.0spoiler Extended lore below

My vote for tribute is Thancred. I feel like his story has been over since Shadowbringer. Urianger and Y'shtola are close to the top of the tribute pile for similar reasons. My save goes to G'Raha Tia for selfish reasons. Also, he should be able to have his reward of many adventures with WoL.

010

Haven K @haven-k.etheirys.social · 30/09/2025

I think G'Raha Tia and Haven would alternate. Both of them have the self-sacrificing type of heroism, especially when the other is involved. It would be a very messed up loop of bringing the other back via their own death.

This is the best product listing copy I’ve ever read

Nothing lasts forever, and that includes the Roman Empire.

The Fall of Rome-Scented Candle smells like cypress trees and red wine. Light it and watch the Roman forum melt into a puddle of wax while you quietly contemplate the impermanence of civilizations and/or candles.

Do you think individual Romans understood that their civilization was collapsing? Or did it happen so gradually that they were able to ignore the warning signs—international trade breaking down, the senate becoming a rubber stamp for the supreme leader, and political violence becoming expected during transfers of power?

It’s hard to say, because it’s impossible to imagine being in that kind of situation. In any event—hope you enjoy the candle!

Ultimately, this is probably an extreme version of their friendship before the Final Days. However, it all falls apart without Hythlodaeus. They also lost their shared purpose of serving in the Convocation, but they probably would have made it work if Hythlodaeus was still around

Haven K @haven-k.etheirys.social · 19/04/2025

Azem would shepherd the new life on the shards as a way to remember those who were lost. Emet-Selch on the other hand would be trying to rejoin the shards. It would be a scrumptious tragedy. Every victory would be tinged with their closest friend's defeat, the only one who truly gets it.

110

Haven K @haven-k.etheirys.social · 19/04/2025

Emet-Selch and Haven's Azem were good friends until the End of Days. So an Ascian Azem would try to stay with Emet-Selch after the sundering. Azem would follow Emet-Selch's lead as far as they could. But ultimately, the two would disagree on the way forward and become adversaries. #HavenKLore
