I slept on this book for TOO LONG. It is SO GOOD! Beautifully written and intricate like a puzzle box. @amalelmohtar.com & @maxgladstone.bsky.social knocked it out of the park with this one.

The mouth of the Scrub Daddy, that’s where knives go when you want to clean them, right? Or should I be discussing this with a mental health professional?

I’ve been a fan of @derfbackderf.bsky.social since I was Managing Editor of the PitchWeekly in KC and he was drawing The City (and alt-weeklies were still a thing). Was blown away by his last graphic novel KENT STATE. Just got this in the mail today and it’s beautiful. Can’t wait to dive in.

And I’m currently reading (with my 10-year-old son) Lightfall by @timprobert.bsky.social. Reminds me a lot of the Amulet series by Kazu Kibuishi, both in the epic nature of the adventure and in the beauty of the illustrations.

I also polished off two non-fiction books I had stalled in, both about two-thirds in. I recommend both Remember by Lisa Genova (an excellent book to help you understand how memory works) and The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin, which is just one great inspirational quote after another.

Never forget…this poster I found at a Cher convention.
A drawing depicts the twin towers with a giant Cher standing next to them holding a shovel. Cher also wears an Uncle Sam hat and a T-shit that reads Chas hearts NY. CHER IS SAYING, “we will build them back even greater!” The statement ends with seven exclamation marks.

Coyote vs ACME was really great. Very funny, sure, but also about how it’s important to fight the big guys even if you lose again and again. And then it has a real heartfelt twist in it that works! Also: there’s like 100 high quality throw-away jokes filling every frame.

Read a LOT of sci-fi growing up but had never heard of Ubik (1969) by Philip K. Dick until my 15-year-old son called it one of his all-time favorites. Do yourself a favor and do NOT read the back of the book first. Just dive in and hang on tight. It’s a wild ride.

Pedro the Vast (2026) by Simón López Trujillo, translated by Robin Meyers is a little like the beginning of The Last of Us if that wasn’t a video game but a poem. A little fact, a little supernatural weirdness, some hallucinatory imagery.

How to Commit a Postcolonial Murder (2026) by Nina McConigley is such a fresh an interesting story. And the solution posed by the title ends up being quite a surprise. Not that the murder is the point of the novel. Because it’s about way more than that.

This is being passed around a lot today, so I’ll share it too. Whether or not Graham changed his tune because of dirt they had on him or because it just seemed more lucrative to do so, the outcome is the same. He was the worst kind of politician and most of his decisions hurt people.
A Tweet of Lindsey Graham’s from 2016 where he said, “If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed…and we will deserve it.”
