Republicans, in their infinite wisdom, left a big gambling loophole in the Medicaid work requirements. I'm no fan of the gambling industry, but if you are on Medicaid and struggling to deal with the work requirements, taking a $580 bet on both sides of an outcome is one way of getting around them.

French data show that firms become large primarily through occasional, large 'innovation bursts' rather than innovating at persistently higher rates. Industrial policy that entrenches the position of incumbents may slow down the churn that sustains aggregate growth. cepr.org/voxeu/column... #EconSky
Industrial policy is back on the agenda across advanced economies, with a growing channelling support towards large incumbent firms on the premise that they are the most capable innovators. This column uses data on French manufacturing firms to argue that this premise deserves scrutiny. Firms become large primarily through occasional, large 'innovation bursts' rather than by innovating at persistently higher rates. The arrival of these bursts involves an element of chance, so a firm's current size says little about how much it will innovate in the future. Policies that entrench the position of incumbents may therefore slow down the churn that sustains aggregate growth.

The extent to which the US is currently sanctioning the US should not be underestimated. Thankfully. one of the lessons in recent years is that sanctions are not all that effective.

A great quote in how AI might struggle to solve our big problems: "Most of our issues in the world are not bottlenecked by intelligence, but by the promise of cooperation, coordination, and essentially alignment of large groups of people toward a common shared goal. " www.wired.com/story/youre-...

It is worth noting that the people in charge of the entire federal government are still incredibly angry about everything. Perhaps, asking liberals to listen to and understand the perpetual grievance machine that cannot be satisfied by getting everything they asked for is not the path forward?

Meanwhile the discourse is mostly about how dangerous the left wind of the Democratic party is with their calls for healthcare and concerns about genocide. In America, nothing to your right, no matter how far, is ever framed as dangerous as the person one step to your left.

Turns out that, if you establish yourself as a piece of shit upfront, the press won't bother to report on you being a piece of shit because it is just expected. Trump, but also the entire Republican party, has taken full advantage of this.

There's a kind of "missing bottom" in American housing markets which is why street homelessness ultimately seems to be a factor of how many spare bedrooms are available in working class areas (since these become a de facto release valve for these pressures) bsky.app/profile/elec...

Precisely this. Everyone asking if this is a gambit to put pressure on Canada in the context of the USMCA talks is missing the forest for the trees. No matter what Canada concedes, it will never be enough to buy trade peace, because the US isn’t interested in peace. That’s the lesson here.
