This is the new climate obstruction. It doesn’t loudly deny climate change. It simply ignores it, while convincing people that every solution is more corrupt, dangerous, and destructive than the fossil fuels it would replace.

So @governor.ny.gov & her Republican NYPA CEO Justin Driscoll saw the affordable energy crisis and decided the best plan was for NYPA to build even LESS public renewables? 😵‍💫 Unacceptable. Public renewables are NY’s best tool for affordable energy - we need more, not less.
Canary Media headline:
New York’s public utility approves plan to build 5.5GW of renewables
The move nearly doubles NYPA’s initial renewables goal but still scales back from summer targets. The agency blames Trump’s tax-credit cuts and grid challenges.
By Alexander Kaufman, for Canary MediaThe New York Power Authority approved a plan Tuesday to nearly double the state-owned utility’s goal for solar, wind, and energy storage projects to 5.5 gigawatts. The new investments would boost clean power in the state as the private market fails to deploy renewable energy fast enough to meet New York’s lofty decarbonization goals.

In a unanimous decision, the board of trustees voted to greenlight the utility’s new strategic plan for renewables. Though the 5.5 GW figure is an increase over the utility’s initial plan, released this January, it also represents a reduction from the 7 GW draft plan NYPA unveiled over the summer. The utility blamed the slimmer target on private renewable-energy developers pulling out of 16 joint ventures. Activists, however, accused NYPA of dropping projects to boost plans for new fossil-fuel infrastructure recently approved by Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat.

The 2019 Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act requires New York to generate 70% of its power from renewables by 2030 and the rest of its electricity from zero-carbon sources by 2040. It’s one of the most ambitious decarbonization goals in the country, but the state is lagging behind on meeting its legally mandated benchmarks in virtually every category of clean power except for distributed energy sources that include rooftop solar.
The finalized plan drew sharp criticism from Public Power New York, a left-wing group that campaigned for the Build Public Renewables Act. Rather than cut back, the group said, NYPA should expand its target to 15 GW of solar, wind, and batteries. The organization helped marshal more than 10,000 public comments supporting the higher-end goal.

“This is unfortunately part of a pattern,” [Public Power NY co-chair] Paulson said. “Instead of using the tools to build a more affordable and better future, Hochul is pushing toxic fossil-fuel projects to enrich her utility donors and potentially even enrich her own family.”

Whether it’s cap and invest or renewable energy, @governor.ny.gov is the biggest obstacle to a more affordable and sustainable NY. The solutions are obvious and they’re right there: make polluters pay and #BuildPublicRenewables!
New York Focus headline:
Climate Groups Sue Hochul Administration Over Climate Law Backtracking
Environmentalists have long charged that New York is falling short of its climate mandates. Now, they’re taking the state to court.
Colin Kinniburgh , March 31, 2025It’s official: New York is being sued over delays in implementing its climate law.

Four environmental and climate justice groups filed a lawsuit Monday in a state court, claiming that New York is “stonewalling necessary climate action in outright violation” of its legal obligations. By not releasing economy-wide emissions rules, the suit alleges, the state Department of Environmental Conservation, or DEC, is “defying the Legislature’s clear directive” and “prolonging New Yorkers’ exposure to air pollution … especially in disadvantaged communities.”It’s the first lawsuit to charge the state with failing to enforce the core mandate of its 2019 Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, or CLCPA: eliminating nearly all of New York’s greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The law tasks DEC with crafting rules to get there and to reach an interim target of 40 percent emissions cuts by 2030.

The state’s deadline to release those rules was Jan. 1, 2024 — a date the agency blew past. More than a year later, New York has yet to issue even draft rules, and it’s becoming less and less clear that it intends to do so, even though, throughout last year, Governor Kathy Hochul’s administration promised that it was working on them as quickly as possible. The plaintiffs charge that by walking back from its climate plan, New York is also infringing on its residents’ constitutional rights — specifically the rights to “clean air and water, and a healthful environment” enshrined through the Green Amendment that voters approved in 2021. Air pollution is especially harming the health of residents in disadvantaged communities, they allege, where several of the groups’ members live near fossil fuel plants or in high truck traffic areas.
...
Since then, regulators have admitted that the state is far behind in meeting key climate targets, and business groups have stepped up calls for the state to rethink the CLCPA.

But for now, it’s still the law, and Spector said there’s no excuse for the state not to enforce it.

Something that's been clear to me for some time is that a lot of progressive advocacy and politics has overindexed on finding just the right combination of words to say while ignoring the fact that no media ecosystem exists where people might actually hear you say them. New from @mmfa.bsky.social
Media Matters compiled a list of 418 popular online shows — podcasts, streams, and other long-form audio and video content regularly posted online — that were active during 2024, assessed ideological alignment, and found 320 online shows with an ideological bent (191 right-leaning and 129 left-leaning) that covered news and politics and/or hosted related guests.

Nine of the 10 online shows from our study with the largest total following across platforms were right-leaning, accounting for at least 197 million total followers and subscribers. These are the online shows of:

Joe Rogan: 39.9 million
Ben Shapiro: 25 million
Jordan Peterson: 23 million
Russell Brand: 22.5 million
Theo Von: 22.3 million
Charlie Kirk: 18.6 million
Nelk Boys’ Full Send Podcast: 16.7 million
Candace Owens: 15 million
Dr. Phil: 14.2 millionAcross streaming platforms including YouTube, Rumble, Twitch, Kick, and Spotify, the left-leaning online shows had at least 55.9 million total followers and subscribers — a figure which is dwarfed by the right-leaning online shows with at least 255.5 million.

This content is further amplified on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok — social media platforms where the programs or hosts post full streams, clips, and show links. Left-leaning online shows had at least 48 million followers across these platforms, while the right-leaning online shows had more than 225 million followers.

Of a cumulative 584.6 million followers and subscribers across all eight platforms, Media Matters found that right-leaning online shows accounted for roughly 82%, or 480.6 million — almost five times more than left-leaning shows’ nearly 104 million.

Want to know the real reason your ConEd bills are through the roof? Surprise, surprise: it’s fossil fuel greed. We don’t have to accept price gouging OR deadly pollution. Join the fight to #BuildPublicRenewables for the future we deserve!
Article headline from The New York Groove: "What's the real reason your ConEd bills have been skyrocketing"

Italicized below: "Spoiler - it's private fossil fuel energy"New Yorkers don’t really have a choice when it comes to electricity providers, so the answers to what you can do about your high energy bill include the practical: don’t use space heaters, unplug ‘vampire appliances’ like TVs, modems and our ever-proliferating collection of screen-having, noise-making smart devices

The bigger solution, as Karolidis and many climate activists across the city have been fighting for, is to divorce our city’s energy grid from fossil fuels entirely.

“If we want consistent prices, we have to move to sustainable energy,” he said. There’s good news on that front: Karolidis and other activists were successful in their efforts to get the state to pass the aforementioned Build Public Renewables Act in 2023. It directs the New York Power Authority to plan, build and operate renewable energy projects to meet the state’s renewable energy goals. It would also replace polluting gas plants that kick into action during peak energy demand periods with renewable energy plants. It will take time for the state to build out those facilities, but activists hope it will lead to energy being less of a capitalist commodity. “Imagine if we derived the vast majority of our energy from a renewable source: Solar, wind, hydropower,” he said. “There’s no additional cost to additional supply. That would simply exist. Supply charges would be substantially lower.”

“There’s no reason whatsoever we should live in a city where we’re forced to pay a private company hundreds of dollars any month so they can make a higher profit,” he said of ConEd. “All of that money instead should go back into the system.”
