$300 dollars on a bill just to be safe in an extreme heatwave? That’s the kind of stuff that would make a horror movie monster blush. If you’ve been ripped off by utility bill horrors, come tell us about it on Tuesday at the Utility Ripoff Hearing. RSVP below ⬇️

A Texan friend once said,
"Air conditioning should be a human right."
I had just left Minnesota and thought she was joking. She told me how serious heat waves really were, and now I've lived through them— and paid for it in more ways than one.
We had a heat dome over the city this summer, trapping humidity and heat and baking everything inside. I have a neurological condition where my body can't regulate temperature normally.
A heat wave could be deadly for me...
So even when I couldn't afford it, I ran my AC most days during the summer to not get sick.I ran it on the energy saving setting and weatherproofed my apartment with
reflective film on the windows, but my bill still came out to
almost $3oo during the worst months-and that was for one room in a studio apartment.
Nobody should have to choose between staying alive or going into credit card debt to be functional, but that's often the position I find myself in, thanks to ConEd jacking up the prices.
My parents live in a town with municipal utilities, and they pay less than I do to keep the lights on for an entire house!
ConEd is punishing people with

3 years after New Yorkers won the Build Public Renewables Act, NYPA is finally breaking ground and just announced one of its biggest projects yet. But this is just one small step. New York still needs at least 15 gigawatts. It’s time for more, and faster.
POLITICO
Weekly NY & NJ Energy
NYPA BACKS NORTH COUNTRY SOLAR PROJECT:
The New York Power Authority is partnering with a private developer to move forward on a large-scale solar project for the first time since the success of the Build Public Renewables campaign.
NYPA announced Monday it bought 51 percent of the 240 megawatt Rich Road solar project in St.
Lawrence County. A subsidiary of French energy giant EDF will retain ownership of the rest of the project and oversee construction. This is NYPA's second large-scale solar project after the authority purchased 100 percent of the 20 megawatt Somers Solar project from CS Energy in March 2025.
That project also has a NYSERDA contract. The authority also backed the smaller 5 megawatt Hannacroix Solar project in Greene County earlier this year.
The Rich Road project has a newly finalized state contract, announced last week. That means it will get subsidies ultimately paid for by New York ratepayers.
The project had previously won an award from NYSERDA's 2021 procurement for new renewables but cancelled it amid rising costs.
The project is expected to start construction next year and start operations in 2029. The project will support NYPA's program to provide bill credits to low-income New York residents, known as Renewable Energy Access and Community Help, or REACH. Payments to local governments are still to be negotiated, according to NYPA.The project will get expiring federal tax credits and is the first to leverage a public-private partnership model, NYPA President and CEO Justin Driscoll said in a statement.
NYPA got another $100 million from the second round of the Sustainable Future Fund in this year's budget, on top of $200 million announced last year.
The authority has faced pressure from Public Power NY to accelerate investments in new renewables. The group has campaigned for the authority to advance 15 gigawatts of new solar and wind. The authority's latest plan has a pipeline of about 5.5 GWs of projects, although more are under consideration.YOUR PRESSURE IS
WINNING PUBLIC RENEWABLES
But we have a lot more to go to build a livable future.
Stay tuned for updates on how you can keep up the pressure to build an energy system that puts New Yorkers first.

Fossil Fuel Front
Claims Credit for Hochul's
Pro-Fossil Fuel Shift
By Katya Schwenk | Aug 28, 2026At a fossil fuel industry conference in April, the pipeline-backed group Natural Allies for a Clean Energy Future took credit for Hochul's change of heart, boasting of "high-level engagement" with her office. According to the group's executive director, Susan Waller, Natural Allies provided the governor's office with in-house polling on New Yorkers' views on natural gas shortly before Hochul's announcement."They had their pollsters call our pollster and sit down and go through it,"
Waller told a crowd of fossil fuel executives and lobbyists. "And within a very short time - weeks - Kathy Hochul went with all of the above."
According to slides and audio of Waller's presentation reviewed by The Lever, Hochul's flip-flop marked a victory for Natural Allies and its corporate benefactors' aggressive 2026 political strategy amid changing headwinds in the Democratic Party: "Leveraging concern about affordability to change the politics around natural gas."The materials provide an inside look into how pipeline companies and fossil fuel interests, eyeing the fault lines running through the Democratic Party, are trying to quell the party's burgeoning populist wing, win the support of establishment actors like Hochul, and build, in their words, a
"bulwark against the far-left."

This is OUR energy. Why should we pay more to subsidize Big Tech? Public power needs to serve New Yorkers first. That means lowering our bills, not giving handouts to data centers.

While New Yorkers pay the 3rd highest utility bills in the country, @governor.ny.gov’s NYPA is giving discounted power to corporate data centers at 5% of the rate residents pay. That energy belongs to New Yorkers. Public power should be for lowering their bills, not corporate handouts.
New York agencies have provided at least $321 million to corporations building data centers in Rockland County since 2013, according to a new report by government watchdog group Reinvent Albany.

The Rockland County Development Agency and the New York Power Authority offered the corporations — including JPMorgan Chase, Bloomberg and DataBank Holdings and Tenants — state and local sales tax exemptions and power subsidies to build 11 data centers in the county.Using New York State Energy Research and Development Authority data, the report found that while the average New York household pays $244 per megawatt-hour for electricity services, data centers in Rockland County, located about 40 miles north of New York City, paid a fraction of that, or $12.88 per megawatt-hour.

In addition, the building and operation of the data centers created 298 “full-time equivalent jobs,” costing taxpayers $1.078 million per job, the report found.

On climate, @lizafeatherstone.bsky.social writes that Hochul and Trump "appear to be BFFs." New Yorkers deserve better.
Several other blue-state governors have made headlines for high-profile Trump defiance, and while they aren't as good on climate as they should be, they're much better than Hochul. California governor Gavin Newsom, hardly a climate hero, has not approved any fossil fuel projects in recent years and has been trying to enact a version of cap and trade (rebranding it as "cap and invest"). Governor J. B. Pritzker of Illinois has also not approved any new fossil fuel projects recently and has worked closely with labor unions on green jobs.Hochul, by contrast, approved the Iroquois pipeline earlier this year and seems to be kowtowing to Trump by expediting approval for the wildly unpopular Williams and Constitution pipelines. The Williams pipeline was rejected by the state's Department of Conservation three times under Andrew Cuomo (himself no wild-eyed opponent of Trump, as we have recently seen). It's not the first time Hochul has flip-flopped on this issue. She has fought hard against the Build Public Renewables Act, a landmark piece of climate legislation designed to create and expand publicly owned renewable energy projects in New York. At first she tried to simply defeat it, then she tried to water it down and politically weaken it by cutting out the labor and
environmental justice provisions. When none of that worked, she appointed a Republican to head the relevant agency, Justin Driscoll, who has testified that the public ownership requirement should be stripped - from the Build Public Renewables Act.While New Yorkers are struggling to afford necessary energy for their daily lives, and we as a polity are trying to create renewable, clean alternatives to fossil fuels, the last thing we should prioritize are these job-killing, water-wasting, and extremely energy-intensive instruments of human alienation.
Hochul's energy policy isn't just bad by normal climate metrics. Not only does she resist policy reforms that will lower emissions, she resists energy affordability itself. Her own agency has presided over punishing rate hikes, while refusing to be a true partner in the cause of public power, the only way to truly guarantee energy in the public interest.
