Your regular reminder that my daughter Alice’s death wasn’t counted in Appleby’s report, despite her meeting all the criteria. And when I emailed the Tavistock adult GIC to inform them they could take Alice off the waitlist, because she’d died by suicide, they never replied. It’s a disgrace.

If you would try to win by abandoning trans people (or any targeted group) you can save this “we need to win” talk; there is no “we.” I am about solidarity, and you have chosen anti-solidarity. You are not any “we” I recognize. You are the enemy I’m trying to defeat. Beating you is how my “we” wins.

We all want women and girls to feel safe. But are we having the right conversations about what puts them in danger? For #BlackHistoryMonth, Saba Ali explores male violence, the risks facing Black, South Asian and trans women, and why women's safety and trans rights are not in opposition.

"For years, trans people have used wards in line with their gender identity, under the NHS’s own guidance – without any harm. The NHS was built on the promise that everyone counts. With this guidance, it has decided that trans people certainly don’t – and some of us will pay for it with our lives."

The new NHS guidance for trans people could put lives at risk
The NHS has decided to make it even worse for trans people – by forcing them to use wards based on their ‘biological sex’.

The UK is working to completely purge trans people from society. They are banning trans people from hospitals, banning their healthcare, banning them from bathrooms, protecting people that will harass them, and making it impossible to exist. This is all happening under Labour.

The NHS's revised guidance on single-sex wards is cruel, unworkable and LGBTIQA+ Greens calls on Labour to withdraw it and reform the Equality Act.
The NHS revised guidance does not offer privacy, dignity or safety to trans people.
Placing trans people on the incorrect “same-sex” hospital wards by default is wrong and unworkable, which is why it also states exceptions for clinical need and a mention of alternative provision.
This is a continuation of the incomprehensible interpretation of the Equality Act 2010 that the supreme court ruled for. We call on the Labour government to withdraw this guidance and reform the Equality Act to end the policing of trans people in single gendered spaces.

As an ex-NHS nurse, Robin, I think you're right. It's all about how things are framed at the moment, and there's still, I think, a good deal in various codes of conduct/practice that we can work with.

Yes, the new NHSE guidance is bad but does not bind HCPs to admitting trans patients to wards for asab. It instead posits that as the policy default, but allows derogations from that where it’s not ‘clinically appropriate’. In reality it hands far too much power and confusion to individual HCPs

Excellent advice 👍: what would they like us to do? Meekly accept things without kicking up a stink. I believe that at the moment, there is still plenty in the law that trans people can make use of - and it's important to make sure that everybody knows it!!

That shouldn't matter, Courtney: if you have concerns over any area of your body, you have the right to get it checked out. Just because there is no regular screening offered, doesn't mean your physicians don't have a duty of care.

Maybe they don't offer regular screening to trans women anymore, but if someone went to their GP with a concern over their breasts, and asked for a screening (especially in email form), my guess is it would be a very brave GP who failed to act on it...
