Wait, "Prime Day" is still a thing? Is it still the Obama administration, before inflation and a world on fire? Oh, wait, it's actually "Prime Big Deal Days,' the meaningless Toyotathon of our times.

Apparently someone at the DNC believes that the time.of least resistance is 4:55 on a Sunday, given the absurd number of frantic, feverish fundraising texts that just arrived, half from people I've never heard of, half from washed up 2016 and 2020 presidential primary dropouts

GenAI is not futuristic. It's more paleo capitalism. Exploited child labor was anp externality of early factories. Frozen worker limbs the externality of industrial meat. Fraud the externailty of speculative investment. Those who are building GenAI are trying to rebuild the past, not the future

Part of why I don't like the AI-or-bust economy is the constant flopsweat of people on the news who say this HAS to work. Quit making everyone so anxious. Goddamn. If this is the next Google then why are you acting like this? I don't remember being told to buy an iPhone at gunpoint.

Honestly, the more I read about AI CEOs, the clearer it is that they don't 'do' anything for themselves, and so have completely lost touch with what people do and how it works. They've already off-loaded so much cognition, they simply can't understand people who haven't - or what they want.

Remember the pandemi? Our lean, storage-light supply chains broke, & there were shortages everywhere That brittleness goes the other way, too. If too much of something piles up, production slows. Then shortages, layoffs "Just in time" logistics are not designed for disasters (nor hunan stupidity)

Today I saw the new 4 hour documentary Musk, directed by Alex Gibney. There were too many times to count that a sold out theater burst out laughing at Elon Musk, something he said or did, even sometimes just how he looked. I believe that is his worst nightmare come to life.

Lists of the best TV show (or movies, books, music, w/e) are a kind of trolling. Their only purpose is to get people to momentarily acknowledge, in a somewhat more positive way, that the New York Times still exists and has relevance. It's like listing the best cheeses. It's futile, pointless....

"Look, I am hitting you for your own good. I had to punch you, I had to punish you. You made me do it, but you'll learn from it. It will make you wiser, better." This is the attitude of tech industry leaders towards everyone else in the world. This is rhe language of abuse.

Absolutely this. Too often we think that the text on the page is the purpose of writing, when it is actually the action of writing that matters. This is also true of reading, where time spent with the words, interacting with the page, is far more important than summarizing or fact mining

Irony, thy name is Meta.
A screenshot of an in-app ad in Instagram for "Muse, your personal AI agent," a new Generative AI product from Meta (who owns Instagram.) Notably, the story it is summarizing with AI is about the Massachusetts Institute of Technology proposing to realign its pedagogy around "4 things AI can't replace." Apparently one thing AINcannot replace is irony.

The 6,915-square-foot residence is outfitted with Domovita.AI, which the listing describes as the first residential AI concierge platform built into a home at the time of construction. Rather than juggling separate apps, the residents tell one system it’s bedtime, and it will lower the temperature, close the blinds and set the house for the morning. Ask it to make a dinner reservation, stock the refrigerator or arrange a car, and it will contact a local concierge service to make arrangements.

People who don't write books assume writer's block is staring at a blank page with zero ideas. In truth it's invariably the opposite. Writer's block is when a dazzling array of options become tyrannical, team up with an unwillingness to fail, mug you in a dark alley and stick a bag over your head.
