“Spaghetti Night.” Pen and copic gray marker on paper.

Our man is in the kitchen making spaghetti for his guests, who have become increasingly rowdy as they wait for dinner. More on them in a moment. He speaks into his landline phone with his oven mitts on, “Everybody’s pretty riled up for spaghetti night.” He is correct because sure enough we see his riled up dinner guests in the background. Two men play wrestle as a woman raises her hand to spank one of the wrestler's cheeks. She’s got great leverage on the windup so those cheeks are about to be pummeled, reader. Another man finds himself being carried by a woman with a crew-cut. Her strength is on display here because despite the man’s weight she’s able to effortlessly run around the living room with him slung over her shoulder like a ragdoll. Behind them we see another spaghetti night guest pumping his fists and shouting to the ceiling. Perhaps howling.

Artist’s note: One of my favorite drawings. Love seeing the whole group having a great time together.

Dear Homer, I evaluate standout voices across literary genres, and the unique premise you’ve built in the Iliad caught my attention. The handling of historical fantasy, rich world-building, and high-stakes action through Achilles and Helen creates a resonance that is provocative and deeply engaging

I don't care if it's a billion pages and the hardest of backs. Charging $40 for a 1000-page novel is a bit too much in my opinion.

Call me a cynic but sometimes I think it's sad that ideas that are basic, graspable, and rather incontrovertible only get traction when there's a book doing big numbers attached to them. It's great that the book exists and discusses The Idea™️, but it can't simply be a matter of identification.

A while back I read a "hyperpolitics" essay that I assume the book is an extension of, and I still have to read the book itself (though whether I do depends on limited time etc), but I am still not convinced about the hyperpolitics thesis. Also, that Guardian article wasn't great.

As a result, it's hard to know what "hyperpolitics" really means. You have to chase it down. Of course, that makes it hard to argue against because the author can just say "you haven't understood it". E.g. here's the thesis statement, which does not define hyperpolitics at all.
This essay ventures a tentative definition, through the lens of what I term "hyperpolitics." The concept is meant to make sense of what comes after the mass politics of the short twentieth century (1914-1989), the postpolitics of the "very long" 1990s (1989-2008), and the antipolitics of the 2010s. Attention will also be given to a range of adjacent political forms, from populism to technocracy to millennial socialism. None of these morphologies is exhaustive of the period in which it arose-periodization is rarely so neat-while a vast corpus of empirical studies could be marshaled to evaluate each. Only a small selection will be discussed here. Hyperpolitics denotes a tendency rather than a totalizing style. Nevertheless, this book argues that it constitutes a gravitational pole in the force field of twenty-first century poli-tics. As such, it is indispensable for understanding the dynamics of mobilization and contestation that determine the contemporary scene. But these can only be grasped when situated in a longer history, linking past and present in an effort of patient distantiation.

Friends remind other friends that when you post a call and people apply, the minimum requirement is you notify those who didn't get selected. Second time this week I hear from someone who applied for a position (not an academic job, which is *really* bad for this) and never heard back.
