You're remembering right, YouGov seem to be misrepresenting this. www.gov.uk/government/p...: "On the basis of evidence available to us we cannot conclude that overdiagnosis is occurring at scale, particularly given the gaps in population prevalence data and data reporting."

No worries, not taken that way. And I know and agree, I don't have any issue with Mark, my apologies if the lack of tone suggested otherwise

"I don't think people should be forced to fund the BBC either. Fuck the BBC. It's rancid." really wasn't remotely defending the BBC. Hating the BBC is the one thing everyone in here seems to agree on, Reform, sloane, Quark Bee, you (IIRC), me.

Literally one of the first generative AI applications generally available to the public was DeepNude in 2019, a few years before ChatGPT would be created. Hard to not see it as a main use case of GenAI with that history.

You're interpreting this far more positively than I am: I'm reading bsky.app/profile/vikk... as forcing barbershops to close being the primary objective, not an indirect consequence. But I do know I'm pretty negative in general; hopefully your interpretation will turn out to be right in the end.

Actually probably agreed on that part, but the motivation behind the bill doesn't seem to be to ensure that barbers are qualified: if the MP is saying it's because there are too many barbershops, we have to assume the motivation is to force barbershops to close, don't we? Or is that too pessimistic?

That sadly has been the case with their previous AI stuff as well, the ability to opt out only appeared when they enabled the AI stuff.

This is correct (on Linux, at least) and strace will confirm it: create an empty file, chmod +x it, strace ./empty fails execve(), and strace -f -e execve sh -c ./empty shows execve() first failing, and then re-execve() successfully through /bin/sh.

No need to say what you expect when we can check what actually happens: www.gmp.police.uk/news/greater... (sentenced to four and a half years) and www.lbc.co.uk/article/met-... (sentenced to one year, increased afterwards to two). Nowhere near seven and a half years.

A slightly different perspective on this: that is a falsehood developers believe, but it's sort of true in our case: the surname on its own does start with a capital letter by Dutch rules. The falsehood that applies to us is that you can get the full name by combining the first name and the surname.

I'm with Elizabeth, I think the "I know what a prince and lover ought to be" only makes sense if "prince" is used metaphorically, but regardless, "Marry him or marry me" means there's only two suitors in total, it can't be two princes plus one poor guy.

Yeah I've seen the groundbreaking movie where a leading man plays two different brothers
A scene from Knight Rider, Goliath, where Michael Knight faces his evil twin Garthe Knight, both portrayed by David Hasselhoff.

There was previously a setting to disable all reposts from all accounts in the Following feed (bsky.app/settings/fol...), you might be thinking of that one? This new option is about disabling reposts from specific accounts only.

Wiktionary notes that ἴδιος (idios), where ἰδιώτης (idiotes) comes from, had alternative forms ῐ̔́δῐος (hidios) in Argolic and ϝῐ́δῐος (widios) in Doric, so might it possibly have been picked up from a dialect that actually did have that H sound? Or would that be impossible for other reasons?

"It's about changing the nature of the support and making some of the support conditional upon people taking opportunities that are presented." This was about a minute after the bit you're referencing. Argue merits as you like but he's literally taking away support that people are currently getting.

Less the moment in time, more the number of times (once). It's the same word: in Middle English, 'for then anes' (for the once) became 'for the nanes' (for the nonce) and then that N stuck. It's similar (but opposite) to how 'an orange' and 'an umpire' should logically be 'a norange' and 'a numpire'

King Charles told me the public keeps eating his prime ministers so l asked how many prime ministers he has and he said he just goes to the parliament and gets a new prime minister afterwards so I said it sounds like he's just feeding prime ministers to the public and then his son started crying.

It's not for no reason, but it is a poor change implemented in a poor way. It was changed as part of github.com/bluesky-soci... to make the likes not just show a number, also show which of the people you follow liked it. They didn't enable that yet, but it still moved the likes around already.

I like what I'm seeing. An issue I had with __attribute__((cleanup)) is that it requires a separate function to call, which means it cannot be used with va_end which is not required to be a function, and is also not permitted to be invoked through a helper function. defer would work for that, right?

He got it from the 1954 Clovers song Lovey Dovey, but variations of the phrase go back decades earlier. mudcat.org/thread.cfm?t... lists a bunch of songs containing variations of the phrase. I think it's more likely that Shirley Jackson got it from one of the earlier songs, personally.

Ugh. Without going into the pros and cons, the currently available AI code reviews are for sure GenAI. Doing that and at the same time claiming that they don't use any GenAI is either demonstrating they don't understand what GenAI is, or that they're relying on readers not understanding it.

Their standards for "wholly generated" and "substantially generated" by AI are different: the labelling applies to both, but they say the latter can still be monetised even when detection improves: "We will therefore not knowingly attribute royalties to music we identify as wholly AI-generated."

Yes, but none of the examples here have padding and none of the comments were about padding. The comment was about initialization of missing elements.

For the avoidance of confusion, the zeroing out of elements for which no initializer has been given has been part of the standard since forever, even in C90 int array[2] = {0}; will initialize both array[0] and array[1] to 0. What C23 adds is the {} empty initializer.

The "Goods bought from a private individual" exception would not apply because even if you count as a private individual, people aren't buying goods. But that "expressly agree" exception, I'm guessing we'll see some form of that to stop people repeatedly subscribing&withdrawing?

The new Renters Rights Act doesn't apply to NI, but even in England, there are situations where "strictly no pets" remains legal for landlords, e.g. when it's a leasehold property and it's not the landlord's choice whether to allow pets.

"Given that the minister responsible for the passage of the Equality Act has confirmed that the ruling reflected the intention of the then-Government" -- Does he really need to be legitimising that? Her interpretation of the SC ruling is completely at odds with the govt's interpretation of it.

In theory great, in practice look at YouTube captions: we get autogenerated captions now for almost video but they are of significantly worse quality than anything manually typed up. People aren't using it as a starting point, they're just leaving it. Wouldn't the same thing happen with alt text?
