Just out of interest does the regulation open a door, whether one agrees or not, to add a levy such as per hire that goes back to say council, TfL or Mayor? Potentially would be framed as supporting infra needed. Not saying it’d be good or bad idea but could see such an argument being made.

“Some Premier League clubs were so "astonished" by comments made by Andy Burnham - appearing to downplay the verdict against Manchester City - that they are now "concerned" about political interference in the appeal process, sources have told BBC Sport.” 💯 my reading. Am amazed by Burhams comments.

So the famous “we have the lowest council tax in London” was because the city was subsidising the council all this time?

@thewaroncars.bsky.social can you also differentiate the idea of a seat belt to a helmet and show the reason why car occupants wear seat belts and not helmets is because of a wider safer systems approach. Whereas for cycling helmets are somehow seen as the difference maker in their own right

They can be pretty inquisitive when it comes to unpicking parking and bus gate fines, yellow boxes and speeding fines for people driving. Problem overall is there are major highway equality and access issues but dealing them in a divide and conquer way is not helpful

Well I think the fact traffic jams, and some substantial ones at that, exist at all tells one a lot of the poor ability of people driving to self regulate. I guess all the mod cons have been created to distract people driving of the impacts of too much driving on them and the externalities on others

It was interesting to pick up from year 1 Silvertown tunnel report that it was only after the imposition of tolls did traffic flow drop (as well as simultaneously adding new bus routes and an er bicycle bus) whereas pre tolls used to be massive queues but demand was so sticky people would through it

Thus high streets need to be attractive places in their own right with communities living along and next to it to survive and thrive. The shops restaurants bars cafes will thrive on the back of the area being a place to spend time in. UK over focuses on how to get to shops and bulk scale.

I recently returned from L’Escala Catalunya. Very impressive. The project called “Pacification of the Seafront” looked to declutter and accentuate the towns value in fishing, beaches, the view, civic space etc. It works as it has dual value - locals use and live there all year with visitors joining
Town centre plaza with beach as centrepiece. Shops live off the place being a nice place to visitSeaside walk decluttered with no cars so people can relax in area to shop, hang out and mingle

I would love to look at more detail on the cross London links on this map too. Looks like the furthest downstream crossing on both maps is Southwark Bridge. Yet - London Bridge has a form of provision, why not at cycleway standard? And - why still nothing east of the centre? And zero plans?

What’s really noticeable is the traffic calming, ramps, reduced speed limits, which are everywhere. Even on busy 80kph roads, when you reach a village, you simply have to slow down. And majority of drivers obey speed limits. If the Irish Gov were serious about #RoadSafety, this is the answer.

The interesting thing for me from holiday to Spain is this area is all the better for the public realm investment but it shows you need to go beyond focus on shops to revitalise an area. Beach centrepiece here with family experience. Shops restaurants bars do well then on back of all this.

I just came back from Spain. It came as a surprise to see the street outside hotel looked like the former so recently when the latter thats there now felt so in keeping with the area. The key though is there was full throttle investment. No scrimping and area is all the better for it.

‘Critical’ status would be far more “far more useful” for Luas projects, Western Rail Corridor
The Government's 'critical infrastructure' designation would have been "far more useful for early-stage regional transit stalled in planning", such as Luas for Cork, Luas to Lucan, or the Western Rail Corridor, one of the county's top transport experts has argued. The Government yesterday designated nine projects, including three transport projects, as critical infrastructure. The transport projects include MetroLink, the Cork Area Commuter Rail Programme, and the Galway City Ring Road.

The only thing I’d slightly say counter to this is that none of this or any bridge closures have been planned. We all know we need to renew or at least repurpose older bridge infra but there’s been a collective head in the sand approach. That element definitely points to a decline in decision making

This really is excellent 👏 I really hope it gets heard and understood far and wide. One associated Q. Did you get a chance to look at parallel issues around how we deal with cycling in terms of fines for breaking traffic lights etc under similar lexicon of ‘motornormative punishment’?

Intriguing powers that be feel empowered to tell people to use less water to match infra but the transport secretary doesn’t feel empowered to ask people to drive less “I’ve got no intention of telling people how they should travel and I’m not setting an overall traffic reduction target”

Doesn’t Birmingham suffer from peak English-itis that you can’t call the whole region by its dominant name because of X, Y and Z which only makes sense locally which invariably then dilutes the wider “brand”. Whereas Manchester is the main Greater Manchester.

We’d do better to frame it as habits and just as no one is perfect, nor is any one driver and that different drivers come with different good and bad habits that need mitigation rather than a binary this person is good driver and this person is a bad driver
