They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Ted Chiang's fav writing quote is from her essay 'Write till you drop' "There is something you find interesting, for a reason hard to explain. It is hard to explain because you have never read it on any page; there you begin. You were made and set here to give voice to this, your own astonishment."

She would be sad if she knew what I’d given up for her. I don’t want her to know. Only at night do I pull my hair back and look. On the left side of my head, there is only a smooth stretch of skin, as though nothing were ever there at all.

Her coughs clear, no longer thick with mucus. Her childlike eyes focus on me, like I am the center of her whole world. Softly, dryly, she croaks out my name. Now I wear my hair loose over my shoulders, soft wisps framing my face, to conceal what I’ve done.

I ask him if he takes cash, Venmo, CashApp. No, he says. All he wants is an ear. I only say yes because at this point, I’m willing to try anything. Over the next few days, I’m almost surprised when my purchase works. My sister’s breathing deepens, no longer shallow and quick.

The cover for Uncanny Magazine Issue 70, "Ocean Swell" by Julie Dillon: A bearded man with his white shirt open to reveal his chest sits in a wooden rowboat with the remnants of faded green paint. He looks up, perhaps in awe or shock as a giant, cresting wave of dark blue-green water looms over him. In white text is the "Uncanny" banner, "May/June 2026," "Issue Seventy," and the artist, writer, essayist, poets, and Uncanny staff credits.

ICYMI! Reading 2025 fiction? Try the short story "Brooklyn Beijing" by Hannah Yang @hannahyangwrites.bsky.social! You can read it here! buff.ly/vmg76Do
The cover for Uncanny Magazine Issue 66, “Listen To Me And I'll Tell You A Story" by Ejiwa "Edge" Ebenebe: In the depths of the sea a little girl sits on what looks to be a giant pink/green octopus tentacle. Several other tentacles extend in the background, curling in the depths. Towards the front and surrounding the little girl is a school of pink fish, some of them stop to listen as she holds one finger up. She looks like she is about to start telling a story. On the lower right corner, another school of fish is making its way over the tentacles, towards the edge of the cover. The quote reads: "When Beijing appeared on the other side of the East River, you turned off your phone. Your friends had hoped for Paris, or Rome, or Santorini, so in the soft fog of their collective disappointment you knew you would be afraid to voice how you really felt..."
