Imagine if a crib that sometimes collapsed while a baby slept inside was treated as an impossible to predict feature of the emergent complexity of cribs and therefore we decided nothing could be done.

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

My wife: Can you read our baby a book?
Me: I can just play an audiobook from my phone.
My wife: But then it won't be in your voice.
Me: I can train a voice model.
Parenting hits different when you work in Al.

all the "RESPECT THE TROOPS HONOR THE TROOPS STAND FOR THEM AND SUPPORT THE TROOPS" stuff the media pushed since 9/11 was a joke. A laugh to them. Every time it collided with whatever it was that Republicans want to do, the troops lose. Trump goes to soldiers' graves and laughs at them!

Days 1 and 2 Day 3: Louie and I decided to branch out from the hotel for breakfast, to save money. We ended up at Olivier's La Boulangerie, which was right around the corner from our hotel AND the reviews online raved about their almond croissants. It was a bit of a wait because only one poor woman was taking orders and filling orders--we assumed somebody was running late or something.

It's hard to believe September is almost over! Mostly because we have spent the month roasting in high 90's temperatures here, and even today we are expected to see 90 degrees. So it still feels like summer, even as the fall workload takes over. I have been working hard. Lots of students (45 counting my college students) and lots of gigs.

Louie and I have been slowly ramping up our travel budgets and our travel days. We've always taken vacations in the summer, but as we've gotten older, we have wanted to travel more. I've gained confidence in my travel planning, and I've found myself wanting to go more places and see more things than I ever did before. There's also a sense of, who knows what the future will bring, that came after COVID and so, we didn't JUST go to Japan last summer.

And the internet tells you, don't do this, just plan one or two activities a day and allow for rest, you'll get home too tired. Which is a good point, I'm sure, except who cares if you get home tired? Of course you want to be able to appreciate what you are seeing, and you don't want to have such a jam packed, down to the minute itinerary that there is no room for extras or diversions, but there is no need to plan for a slow trip unless that's what you want.

But it doesn’t even make the news. That the president is threatening to take over our closer allies. Or who used to be. He wants us to be isolated from the world so he can get richer and richer and richer. And then they say, oh it’s a joke.

Japan Trip: One Night in Matsumoto
When we decided to go to Japan, I asked (myself), can we go to Matsumoto? This is where Shinichi Suzuki had his school, this is where he lived when he pioneered the Suzuki method, a method, a philosophy really, of teaching children to play music by using music in the same way that a child learns his native language. This is the method I learned violin through, and it greatly informs how I teach the violin.

Pedagogy is not some new, unsolved problem awaiting its Silicon Valley disruptor. If you want good teaching in any given subject, it’s there to be had. If you just don’t want to pay for it, then all we’re really talking about is how much you want something for nothing. That’s nothing new, either.
