Tom first developed a software where he could model the magnetic field using various magnets (which you can see on the left of one of the previous images). Then he created it (see the white box he is holding here). He uses a special brush and special substance to paint (I think?) @tomhyatt.co.uk

Seriously enjoyed the @britsciassoc.bsky.social award lecture by @tomhyatt.co.uk a couple of days ago! We were taken on a wonderful journey which brought James Clerk Maxwell to light, via the materialisation and dematerialisation of electromagnetic art. Can't wait to see what comes next! 👀

best preacher that ever was, dear star, that just happens to be where you are in the universe to keep us from ever-darkness, to ease us with warm touching, to hold us in the great hands of light– good morning, good morning, good morning. Watch, now, how I start the day in happiness, in kindness.

I'm the Award Lecturer of the Social Sciences category at the British Science Festival this year! I'll be talking about my research on the complex relationships between lighting, safety, and inequality in our cities at night. How might we design healthy, just, and convivial nighttime environments?

I haven’t had notifications on my phone in a decade. A list of exactly five people can break through my DND if they call twice. This freaks 1) millennials 2) Gen Z 3) students out to no end. I don’t know how we ever thought this was okay but then again I’m old.

This is devastating. The skills that astronomers learn are invaluable to society, many going into industry, the civil service, science communication, … such drastic cuts will have terrible consequences in the long run.

That uses data from VIIRS which is an infrared satellite and so it doesn’t pick up light from LEDs (which is typically bluer). This is why photographs taken by astronauts are so much better (it contains the blue light). But also much more difficult to process and put it all together!
