Max Eisen was a Hungarian Jew. His family were sent to Auschwitz. His mother, grandparents and siblings were separated from him on the platform and were murdered & incinerated within minutes. He was 15. He survived by working in the infirmary.

I have a few girls' adventure books on my shelves, awarded to my late mother by her Sunday school when she was 9 or 10. I remember reading them when I was a similar age - especially this one about "the small & grimy" yet "independent & cheerful" Lee Morris who desperately wanted to be a girl guide

Impossible to overstate @thehistoryguy.bsky.social 's achievement. I remember the pre-History Hit era when Dan realised podcasts had potential & there were opportunities emerging for multi-platform broadcasting. He turned an idea, he discussed over pints in pubs, into a huge success.

Contemplating changing the working title of my current book project (which is about 18th-century diamonds) from "Diamonds: something something 18th century" to "Greed: something something 18th century and all the people in this book are pretty vile"

Struggling to find many characters that are likeable in my current project. Rogue of the day today is Philip Rundell of Rundell & Bridge (1746-1827), a millionaire goldsmith with a showroom at 32 Ludgate Hill and not, but all accounts, a very pleasant individual.. /1

Disappointed that I can't make the Wolfson History Prize reception later. Evidently my annual tradition is to plan to go until events conspire against me. I will enjoy envying my colleagues toasting the winner at Claridges (because of course history is always as glamorous as Claridges). 🥂

This obituary for the award-winning costume designer of Peaky Blinders, Stephanie Collie, is a wonderful tribute to her research process and skill. It’s easy to criticise costumes in TV historical dramas, but historical inaccuracies are rarely errors, they’re often storytelling choices

A great thing that John Kearns said on the Always Be Comedy podcast. When you get the end credits on films these days that go on for ages, why don’t we tell kids that those are all jobs they could do? Like, you can be part of this, it’s real.

Huzzah. The National Trust @nationaltrust.bsky.social & their own Celia Richardson @celiarichardson.bsky.social are now on Bluesky. Celebrating their arrival with an Image of Osterley House, National Trust, that weird and wonderful combination of Robert Adams interiors and East India Company bling.
The Long Gallery at Osterley House, Hounslow. The the right on the green walls are large European paintings and elegant 18th-century sofas. On the left just visible behind ivory pagodas encased in glass are 2 large Chinese parade vases, evidence of the Child family's close connections to the East India Company and its luxury goods.

We have furniture in our house inherited from our late parents and grandparents. My husband whacked his head on a Victorian cupboard yesterday, today a large wooden clock fell on my head and we are convinced we have upset the ancestors. Tempted to sell all spooky antiques & live to tell the tale

The article text suggests more collaboration than clash so it is a shame the title doesn't reflect that. The presumption that historians must be in conflict with creators of historical drama makes for easy journalism but it is rarely the full story: www.theguardian.com/film/2024/no...

When historians and directors clash: ‘Ridley Scott was Napoleonic – there was no doubt who was in charge’
Film and TV have a slippery relationship with the truth when it comes to historical epics. So spare a thought for the historical experts whose advice often goes unheeded
