Would love to hear your thoughts - feel free to comment or reach out! P.S: We have also conducted an fMRI study using the same paradigm and I am going through the data at the moment. Hoping to share some exciting results soon!

This suggests that it results from a fundamental asymmetry in human learning that corrections and fact-checking may not be able to adequately overcome.

Hamid Razi @hamidrazi.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
The confirmation bias we observe isn't a product of political tribalism or deep-seated beliefs; it shows up in a simple task using abstract symbols and money.

Hamid Razi @hamidrazi.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
The takeaway: Knowing something is false doesn't prevent us learning from it. This is because confirmation bias operates both when information is labelled as false and true.
100 1
Hamid Razi @hamidrazi.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
In cases where information disconfirmed their beliefs (i.e. suggested they had made a poor choice), learning reduced down close to 0 (see the red bars for False below)
100 1
Hamid Razi @hamidrazi.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
But they mostly did this in one particular case: when the false information confirmed that they had made a good choice (e.g., an option they chose gave them a reward, or an option they didn’t choose lost money).
100 1
Hamid Razi @hamidrazi.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
However, labelling information as false did not cause learning to completely evaporate. People did still learn and adapt their choices in response to false information.
100 1
Hamid Razi @hamidrazi.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
The finding: Participants learnt less from false compared to true information. This suggests that labelling information as either true or false does have an influence on how much the information changes their beliefs subsequently.
100 1
Hamid Razi @hamidrazi.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
To answer this, we adapted a classic two-arm bandit task in which people needed to figure out which options (presented as abstract symbols) to choose to earn the most money. After each outcome, participants were then told whether the outcome (win or lose money) was true or false.

Hamid Razi @hamidrazi.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
The question: How does human learning change when we find out that information is true or false? 🤔

The uncertainty around Iran war is becoming unbearable. The internet blackout exacerbates an already unsettling situation. Can barely reach my family. I left Iran in late January and engaging in science has kept me sane so far.

I once saw a (very interesting) talk about sleep in which the speaker started by saying that we don't really know how to define sleep, and then proceeded to operationalize sleep in flies as basically periods when they are still for a long time. This got me thinking...

Modern theories of emotion (especially “interoceptive inference”) often cite William James as a key inspiration. But what did James actually say about emotion, and is it supported by the data? Here’s a brief look at the core arguments and classic evidence. 🧵

Is risk-taking shaped by decision-making or by learning? In new work, we show that in experience-based risk-taking, very little variance is explained by decision-making (top), but a lot is explained by learning (bottom). www.nature.com/articles/s41...
