Very important for @economist.com, like most corporate media, to pin the blame for food inflation on factors beyond the control of food suppliers. Here they blame war and workers. Never mind that a DOJ investigation into price-fixing broke the inflationary fever for eggs.

Massachusetts has an opportunity to lead by preventing surveillance pricing in grocery stores: the practice of using personal data to charge different customers different prices for the same item. I'm glad to be leading on this bill and to share this important article.

A bill in Massachusetts, H.99, would ban grocers from using biometric data collected on their premises to personalize prices. In my latest with Gavin Sicard, we make the economic case in support of a such a ban. The only winners from personalized pricing are the companies engaged in the practice.

Tesla & SpaceX have benefited from ~$40B in government subsidies. Tesla paid $0 in federal income taxes in 2025, despite $5.7B in income. SpaceX has paid little to nothing in taxes since it was founded. Now Elon is a trillionaire who has pumped over $300M into our elections. The vicious cycle.

We hear a lot of price talk in the affordability debate (eg, the rents are too damn high). Affordability turns not just on what you pay, but also on how much you make—it’s the ratio that matters. Progressives have good ideas for confronting the price side of the ratio …

Why aren’t investors, when evaluating SpaceX, factoring the risk that gov’t funding—which accounts for ~20% of the company’s revenues—could take a hit under a Democratic regime? Perhaps the market understands that the median Democratic politician is spineless and would never exact revenge on Musk.

Sigh. The @economist.com’s argument against @gabrielzucman.bsky.social’s 2% wealth tax proposal is slippery-slope. Rather than debate the merits of a 2% wealth tax, as proposed, the magazine wants to debate some hypothetical future tax increase. With that logic, we wouldn’t have an income tax.

Yes, it has indeed made shareholders (and some franchisees quite rich). It has done so, in large part, by incentivizing franchisees to drive worker wages as low as people, while systematically excluding workers from labor rights.

There’s a reason that companies love to make expansive, sometimes absurd, claims about market definition: as the Supreme Court has narrowed the scope of per se illegality in antitrust law, plaintiffs are required to demonstrate that defendants possess market power. 1/3
