In a miserable world, this genuinely made me smile. Small acts of kindness. Genuine ways we can help to preserve London’s history.

Something really fishy going on with absentee ballots for overseas voters for the American midterms. In all the years I have lived in the UK I have never not received a ballot. This year it seems to have gone missing. What do I do? Any suggestions? Apparently it was meant to have arrived mid-Sept.

📅 #onthisday 30 Sept 1888 Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes are killed in what became the “Double Event”. Two women, two full lives, later reduced to a myth. Hallie Rubenhold reminds us that justice lies in remembering who they were, not who killed them. 🎧 Listen 👉 pod.fo/e/376763 #otd

It’s amazing, isn’t it? What she witnessed in the course of her life from the 1880s to the 1960s would have been pretty remarkable.

That veil Ethel is wearing would one day end up in her daughter’s dressing up box. Ethel was unrepentant until the bitter end.

This is the famous Bow Street Magistrate’s Court, now part of a stunning hotel - the Nomad. Although the actual building is Edwardian, both Henry Fielding and John Fielding (‘the blind justice’) presided here in the 18th century. Many of today’s barristers remember cutting their legal teeth here too

A bit more context to this photo - the event was held in the very room where Crippen and Ethel had their hearing in 1910.

A fantastic speaker and a fantastic location We welcomed Hallie Rubenhold back to Bow Street to discuss her latest book, Story of a Murder, in the building where Dr Crippen and Ethel Le Neve had their committal hearing. Hallie detailed how they were eventually brought to justice.

I know, the loose hair in period drama thing drives me insane. Second only to corsets worn directly against the skin and men in leather frock coats.

Yes! I'm correct! I'm pleased to say that after all of these years my eighteenth century eye still hasn't failed me. A film set in the 1790s will be a real treat for some of us Georgian nerds @emilybrand.bsky.social @maddypelling.bsky.social @hannahgreig.bsky.social @laurasrobinson.bsky.social

Clothing history people, am I imagining it or does it look like the new Sense and Sensibility is set in the late 1790s?

Turned down last week: 2 festivals with no budget for speakers 1 writing course with no budget for teachers 1 film project with no budget to option the book - plus they wanted me to write the screenplay. For free. Don't do it, kids. Don't work for free. Because to them, what's free is worthless.

There are many reasons for this but some of it comes down to a fundamental misunderstanding of what history actually is and in some cases a very deliberate misinterpretation of my work.

This is the normal process of history writing, as most historians will agree. It’s not about discovering and enumerating facts. It’s not about owning facts. History is about building arguments. That’s it. I simply can’t see what’s objectionable about that process.

‘Serious historians’ evaluate and build on the work of others. In the process of sifting through and evaluating that work, a historian may choose to agree with or disagree with the work of others. Sometimes work has been read and discarded as being outside the scope of the book being written.

By all means, do read books in addition to The Five. You’ll find the people who I ‘claim don’t exist’ cited in my bibliography and end notes. For 7 years some people have claimed that I and The Five have dishonoured the victims. Please. Enough of this nonsense.

Final thought - have a look at various contemporary Workhouse Guardian guidance books/literature because these procedures are discussed. Can’t recall titles off the top of my head but check the bibliography in The Five.

Parishes were also afraid that outdoor relief for women on their own would only encourage prostitution.

Basically, they had to go into the workhouse or find a relative they could live off of, and not all relatives would have taken kindly to them leaving their husbands if he ‘slapped them around’.

I think the objective was not to pay outdoor relief and allow women to set up independently. But these policies changed all the time and varied from parish to parish.

In the admissions process the names and addresses of family members were asked and they were told to go there, unless that wasn’t possible (they lived far away, etc). Often women knew that going to a family member’s wasn’t possible and so they lied. They could then be taken into the workhouse where

If the police picked them up, they were often taken to the workhouse. Then in the admissions process it was established where their home parish was and they were transferred there (though at that point many just didn’t bother going to another workhouse and went back out on the street).

Have a look through workhouse admissions records @sophiemhistory.bsky.social. It seems that women were processed through the workhouse. They were questioned about who supported them and who they could be sent to. Many parishes would rather have them sent to a home (husband's father's, brother's).

This really is worth a watch. A mother of mixed-race children in Piddington breaks down when thinking about the bigotry that's been revealed in her village. It's so awful to see how quickly the mask of politeness can fall off to reveal the evil face of racism beneath.
