Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

I think the most jarring thing about Mamdani and AOC is how their speech stands out so much amongst politicians in this country, and yet fits in so well with how my friends speak . That’s generally a political loser overall (NERDS), so it’s just very gratifying to see them win and be appreciated.

That’s not fair - California Environmentalism is also that plastic straws are banned in the restaurants that need 10 parking spaces per table in approximately 4 coastal cities.

It’s so unbelievably embarrassing to be a professional tech reporter whining about corporate greed because the treat phone you want is priced too high for your liking, but it is very on brand as a mark of our Treatler society.
On Wednesday, Apple introduced a foldable iPhone, and at $2,000 it's the most expensive one yet.
The Duo, as its called, is passport-sized and essentially transforms into a mini tablet when unfolded.
While reviewers haven't had much hands-on time with the device, early impressions appeared to be largely positive. Then there's the price. CNET's Katelyn Chedraoui accused Apple indulging in corporate greed even though it already enjoys massive profits.
"I want an iPhone Duo," she wrote,
"but I refuse to pay that much."

This is a related and expanded graphic which emphasizes an important point: Higher speeds reduce your visibility and reaction time, making it more likely you'll hit someone or something, and then when you *do* hit them, it's more likely to be fatal.
A graphic that says Why Speed Matters

Below that are two stats:

Drivers yield 75% of the time while traveling 20 mph
Drivers yield only 17% of the time when traveling 37 mph

The next line shows that drivers have a much wider field of vision at 15 mph as compared to 30 to 40 mph.

Finally, there are three stats:

9 out of 10 pedestrians survive when hit by a car traveling 20 mph
5 out of 10 survive at 30
1 out of 10 surive at 40

I have been a huge fan of Abridged and have found their reporting to be such a great addition to the Sacramento region’s local news ecosystem. Definitely give them a follow if you’re a Sac/Yolo County local, they cover issues no one else devotes resources for anymore.

Every city, but especially Sacramento, should be replacing the status quo staff who continue push forward unprotected projects with people who actually care deeply about safety rather than their careers. With $36m a year around the corner 🤞, we need the right people @caitymapled5.bsky.social

If this team hadn’t already made itself a patsy over and over again to the worst of our present-day country, accepting this blatant corruption and cheating whose outcome will rightly be claimed by Trump has made them utterly pathetic. Unamerican and cowardly to their core. A victory would be a loss.

One calculation that blew my mind: When I push a pedestrian beg button to cross an arterial road w/ 40 mph spd limit. Wait of 90 sec means a car 1 mile away gets to priority to clear the intersection before I am allowed to cross the road. I am standing roadside breathing particulates

California politics has a lot of complete dumbos who think they are wiser than Solomon, but I don’t think there’s a bigger discrepancy across such a long period of time and across so many issues between how much of a dumbass Glazer is and how much he thinks his contrarianism makes him brilliant.

From Truckee to Miami, the pressure to socialize how climate change has made certain places unbelievably risky needs to be resisted by talking about how the changing climate will not go back. More warming and worsening extreme conditions are baked in for another 30 years at least.

Static maps will increasingly shield us from reality. 3-5 million years ago (the last time that atmospheric CO2 ppm was around 420ppm), sea levels were 50-80 feet higher. There will be a lag: we are physically changing the atmosphere much faster than other systems can respond. Just a matter of time.

Comic panel of Donald Duck and a wide-eyed young Mickey Mouse. Donald's speech bubble: "Democrats should do a huge middle class tax cut to address affordability." Mickey's speech bubble: "Fool that you are, for you treat taxation as a burden rather than the means by which our burdens are eased. Behold a civilization rich in private wealth yet starved of public provision, where every man owns what his grandfathers could not imagine and yet trembles at the thought of how he will weather an illness or loss of livelihood. Will you fight for an affirmative vision of broad contribution and universal benefit? Or will you perish like a dog?"

Despite a lot of lip service from council members, nothing changes as the death toll rises. In 2026, it appears that we are on track to have the most traffic violence deaths on record (and on track for it to surpass homicide as the leading cause of violent death).

In a world where child rape allegations against Cesar Chavez are universally accepted and substantial evidence of child rape by Donald Trump is believed by a majority of the country, it’s crazy that so many Kevin Johnson apologists receive 0 repercussions in Sacramento.

The significant difference here between centrists and Working Families AND Peace&Freedom candidates is not that one has a serious plan to implement MC4A, but instead that the latter advocate the universal backstop should be subsidized by urban taxpayers.

Federal Safe Streets for All (SS4A) grants now penalize applications that include bike lanes, lane reduction, traffic calming, and speed cameras.
Less Favorable Considerations:
• Inclusion of infrastructure reducing level of service for vehicles or reducing access for emergency vehicles, delivery vehicles, and vehicles serving the disabled;
• Inclusion of automated traffic enforcement, except in work zones, school zones, or cameras affixed to school buses; and
• Inclusion of new dedicated bicycle lanes that reduce vehicular capacity or impair movements.
