Today I read Hannah Arendt's The Aftermath of Nazi Rule, where she described typical German sentiment. It's the same ethical ambivalence: no one is right or wrong—there is no hope for progress. We are sinners in a state of perpetual disagreement that (womp womp) sometimes kills millions of us.

Similarly evasive is the standard reaction to the ruins. When there is any overt reaction at all, it consists of a sigh followed by the half-rhetorical, half-wistful question, “Why must mankind always wage wars?” The average German looks for the causes of the last war not in the acts of the Nazi regime, but in the events that led to the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise.

I appreciate the responses. For the record, I think liberalism is best regarded as an ongoing movement than a bounded ideology. I can't help but note the contradiction of seeing signs held next to each other that either say "no kings" or "the law should be king". Whither liberalism?

I think it's telling that his idea of contractualism and democratic consent is willful self-subjugation to the legal "king". Freedom for him was obeisance to a rational authority, enforced with violence (only for the irrational 'bad ones', ofc). Turbo lame, imo.

I think the left tradition has plenty of answers—things like mutuality, anti-authority, the practice of care. Politics is just ethics applied to the polis. Those same ethics can be applied to dating and relationships. That's what the right is doing.
