🐟🚨 New paper! 🚨🐟 Where do behavioral differences come from? Early life environment clearly matters... ...or not? Early environment affected behavior, but NOT how different individuals became from each other. Those differences were seeded before birth through factors OTHER than genetic variation 🤯

Born This Way: Individuality Is Seeded Before Birth and Robust to Ecological Stress
We reared and recorded behaviours of clonal Amazon mollies in standardized environments, with and without predation stress, from birth through week four of life, to understand how the developmental e...

Very excited to see this multi-faceted* study, led by Shane Wright and representing years of work on visual evolution and perception in Heliconius as part of our ERC Starting Grant, released into the world! 🦋*pun very much intended www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Congrats Jack!! 🦗🧬 So excited to see this one out—fantastic work! This work investigates how cricket populations have adapted at the genomic level following the introduction of the parasitoid fly and show how this novel selective pressure has shaped both population structure and genetic variation.

Here are high-quality genome assemblies for the hybridizing field crickets Gryllus pennsylvanicus and Gryllus firmus, key models in speciation research! Each assembly is to chromosome scale, with nearly complete genomes. The authors also identify a major inversion on the X chromosome. 1/2

Leaf-mimicking katydids don’t just use their funky camouflage to survive, they’re using it to find love too! 🥰🍃💘 New paper out now in #ProcB @royalsocietypublishing.org (Photo cred: Christian Ziegler): doi.org/10.1098/rspb... 1/n

Thrilled that our new review article on animal hybridization is now up on EcoEvoRxiv! 🎉 Working on this review with @mollyschumer.bsky.social was a blast, and it was such a wonderful opportunity to catch up on all the amazing work in animal hybridization over the last few years!

So excited to share our new work out in @evolletters.bsky.social today! doi.org/10.1093/evle... Sexual signals and preferences for them often differ across groups, contributing to reproductive isolation. But how do new signals evolve if females already have preferences for existing ones? (1/4)

How relaxed preferences facilitate the evolution of novel animal signals
Abstract. The evolution of novel animal signals is critical to the generation of biodiversity. Here, we explore how new sexual signals become established.

This is such a winning idea that will help solve the current challenges of replication in the field of animal behavior, while also providing an excellent opportunity for early-stage grad students (and even undergrads!) to learn how to science. @behavecol.bsky.social

If you know anyone who might be interested in working as a technician before a PhD, I'm looking for someone to work with me to generate some amazing data to understand the genetics of behavior, sex differences, and reproduction in an evolutionary context. Bonus? Amazing and supportive department!

We have a postdoc position available in the lab on post-copulatory barriers in hybridizing crickets. We have genomic data ready to be analyzed and crickets ready for experiments. This is a great collaborative group and a study system with a lot of potential for new projects. Join us!
