For #sciartseptember I present an artsy illustration of one of my study species- the orangethroat darter(Etheostoma spectabile)! This fish (and the whole Ceasia clade) played a major role in my PhD research on sensory systems and species discrimination. #sciart #scicomm #fish #ichthyology
An illustration of a male orangethroat darter(Etheostoma spectabile). This art piece uses squiggles and blocks of color and line work to emphasize the orangethroat darter’s colorful patterning.

This #sundayfishsketch is inspired by images my good friend and fellow fish biologist Kyle Grundy took! The blotchside logperch have evolved conical snouts and strong skulls linked to their mutualistic/parasitic relationship with native (and endangered!) freshwater mussels #scicomm #sciart
An ink drawing of a blotchside logperch (Percina burtoni) sits on a sandy river bottom with several rocks that have hornleaf riverweed (Podostemum ceratophyllum) growing on them.

New paper out today led by @gallinaciega.bsky.social We show that seed-eating songbirds have enlarged a somatosensory nucleus, especially the part associated with the tongue, suggesting that seed-cracking is dependent on a fine sense of touch. #ornithology #neuroethology doi.org/10.1098/rspb...
A multipanel figure showing a cartoon of a songbird head, a cartoon diagram of a songbird brain, and three black and white images showing the cellular structure of the brain region we focused on, PrV. The following is the legend that accompanies the figure. (a) Shows in different colours the areas of the innervation in the head, beak and tongue by the three branches of the trigeminal nerve (V1-V3) and the hypoglossal nerve (XII) in a songbird and the respective areas of innervation in the principal sensory nucleus of the trigeminal nerve (PrV; based on Faunes & Wild [26]). (b–d) Microphotographs of Nissl-stained coronal sections through the principal sensory in nucleus of the trigeminal nerve (PrV) in three species of songbirds: (b) the pine grosbeak (Pinicola enucleator, Fringillidae); (c) the field sparrow (Spizella pusilla, Passerellidae); (d) the Carolina chickadee (Poecile carolinensis, Parulidae).

For #SundayFishSketch this week, I was inspired by a Mary Oliver poem and painted a spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias). These friends have some of the longest gestation periods of any animals, which last 18-24 months.
Watercolor painting of a slender shark on a blue/green background facing to the right of the page. Above the shark are the words “Dogfish/ …And nobody gets out of it, having to/swim through the fires to stay/in this world.
Below the shark and to the left are the words “…And probably/if they don’t waste time/looking for an easier world/they can do it”.

For this #sundayfishsketch I have a darter species that I can’t stop talking about- the Caney Fork Darter (Nothonotus starnesi). The male fish develop bright red spots and emerald green color in the spawning season, AND have parental care! What a fish. #SciComm #illustration #fish #SciArt
