Inviting any president to an active disaster is going to put even more strain on local emergency services, shut down air space and roads for security and make it harder for firefighters and other responders to do their jobs. Inviting this particular one even more so.

NLETS is a 50 year old data-sharing system that connects law enforcement databases nationally, allowing ICE/CBP to access WA DOL data. In WA, officials have taken some action to cut off access to Nlets for some federal immigration agents, yet the number of searches—and arrests—continue to grow.

How Nlets is used in roadside arrests:
1. CBP/ICE surveillance: ICE and CBP agents surveil locations where they expect to find undocumented residents, or target vehicles they deem suspicious.

2. CBP/ICE searches license plate numbers in WA DOL data via Nlets: Agents run license plate numbers in Nlets, obtaining information from WA DOL via WA State Patrol’s ACCESS—including name, address, vehicle registration information, and more.

3. CBP/ICE makes an arrest: DOL data can be used to cross reference an individual’s immigration status. Agents can then proceed to arrest the driver while in traffic, or travel to their registered address to arrest them on a subsequent day.

August research update: This week, we confirmed the 90th case in which federal immigration agents carried out an arrest on Washington roads after querying WA’s DOL database, almost doubling our numbers from just a month ago.

August Research Update: DOL-assisted roadside Immigration arrests in Washington state continue, 90 cases confirmed. UWCHR has confirmed 90 cases where WA drivers were arrested by ICE/CBP following a search of their license plate number in the WA DOL’s database via Nlets. Also, the calls for state (and non state) violence towards this person are really upsetting. Have heard calls for this person's death in person around town and seen them online even before the confession came out. Whole thing is heartbreaking from all angles

Well shit. That's really fucking sad. Arson is the worst answer to the question of what caused this. Study after study shows people with mental illness are far more likely to be the victim of a violent crime than commit one. Further criminalization of mental illness is not the answer.

Maybe I'll have more to say later, how I'm feeling right now - election results were mixed. I'm glad it seems like transit is heading for a win barring some pretty major shifts. Spokane kinda has more pressing shit going on right now though.

Voting is insufficient but important. Electoral activism is insufficient but important. It was nice and weird and surreal being an electoral organizer again for a while. Who knows, maybe I'll do it again

I was in the ER with a family member basically all day yesterday and the conversations I overheard made me glad they set his bail at a million dollars because people are (understandably) furious

Yeah It's absolutely possible. There's a whole range of possibilities from he just happened to be there, to he ashed a cigarette and started it accidently, to he set it purposefully and maliciously. I certainly don't know

But for now he is innocent until proven guilty. I'm gonna stay skeptical of the county sherrif because they have more than earned our skepticism. Spokane and the surrounding area are going through it we are all in a daze. We must resist the urge to place blame without evidence.

This person's history is also not evidence. He was contacted about fires last year but never charged, let alone arrested or convicted. His manslaughter conviction while awful and disturbing is also not evidence for this case. Again people do sometimes do really awful things. He may well be guilty

An arrest is not a conviction. Having matches and a lighter and being seen in the vicinity of where a fire started is not nearly enough to convict this person. I basically always have a lighter and cigarettes on me. A lot of people do.

Sometimes people do really awful things. It is entirely possible that these fires were started exactly as the Spokane County sherrif alleges. All the evidence that has been shown so far, however, is very circumstantial.
