I want everyone on the "safe and healthy" task force to please read this article. Jail is for punishment, not for treatment. Jail is where people become traumatized. “There’s no such thing as a trauma-informed cage”
“I think about prison reform as a kind of coercion itself—that there’s no world outside of this, and the best we can do is make it a little nicer,” Krig continued. “The problem is that prisons and jails aren’t about actually responding to social problems. They’re about maintaining this legacy of white supremacist patriarchy, and in that way, they’re absolutely doing what they set out to do.”

Working late tonight which means I'm off this morning and watching yesterday's ombuds report. The only reality is that the only threat to public safety on june 11th 25 came from local and federal law enforcement.
A slide stating that from SPDs perspective they weren't assisting ICE on june 11th but responding to public safety risks and that from the community's perspective SPD acted to assist ICE. Slide then says the report will address both realities

Thirty years for moving left wing zines and materials
Prosecutors in the case charged and secured conviction for eight of the nine defendants with providing material support for terrorists. The ninth defendant, Daniel Sanchez-Estrada was not at the protest, but was convicted of corruptly concealing a document or record after prosecutors said he moved leftwing zines and other materials at the request of Rueda, his wife, after she was arrested. Sanchez-Estrada was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Tuesday

Read the whole thing. Remember what you're seeing in these cases and believe it. The whole system is corrupt and racist and rigged and it isn't new. Pretending getting rid of Trump will solve it guarantees it won't be solved.
I took it upon myself to suffer through the broken links and typos that fill the Department of Justice’s website these days so that I could report this back to you: There are 93 U.S. Attorney’s offices in the United States. Of the 93 people currently running them,1 81 were either state level prosecutors or at the Department of Justice prior to their appointment.2 That’s 87% of the people running federal prosecutions right now, the ones we’re saying are exceptionally biased and bad and beyond the pale in terms of ethics and lawyerly code. Eighty-seven percent. Fully 72% of them were specifically prosecutors in a U.S. Attorney’s office. The New York Times declares, There’s No Escaping the Rot in This Justice Department. I agree, but it’s staffed with the same people. Do we think they had totally different ethical codes about obtaining an indictment or conviction prior to January 20, 2025? Does it maybe seem a little bit more likely that they were just being pressured to obtain indictments and convictions against different people, as opposed to the President’s high-profile political enemies? Do we recall roughly 38.5% of people in federal prison are Black despite Black Americans being roughly 13.7% of the United States population? Do we remember that one of the drivers of this disparity is the well-documented racial disparities at every level of the criminal legal system, including prosecutorial discretion in who gets indicted, what they get indicted with, and what plea deals they’re offered

Al Letson:	So what does Tupac mean in the larger story of America?
Jeff Pearlman:	I’ve been thinking about this a lot, actually. I live in Southern California. We had all the ICE rads happen recently and still do, and you had all these young, not even just young, brown people being grabbed off the streets by police. I thought it was very interesting how Ice Cube, who lives out here, didn’t say a thing. Dr. Dre, not a thing. Snoop Dog, not a thing. And I’m not saying the onus should be on Black celebrities. I didn’t hear Taylor Swift or Mandy Moore or Olivia Rodrigo saying a thing either, but I’m just saying they didn’t say a thing. I can’t say what Tupac at age 54 would be doing with his life, but there’s no way in hell Tupac is just watching cops or masked agents grab brown people off the streets and sits there.

Great interview
this book thinking this is the dumbest death ever too. The whole thing just pisses me off to this day, because [inaudible 00:31:24]-
Al Letson:	Why? What is it about it that drives you crazy?
Jeff Pearlman:	Because it actually makes me angry, I swear to God. Tupac Shakur was one of the great artists in American music history, in my opinion. And he was profoundly smart and in many ways incredibly enlightened. And there’s no reason he shouldn’t have his 12th Academy Award now, or there’s no reason he shouldn’t be the governor of California. He had just an endless reserve of talent.

4,102 years.
In the US, thousands of innocent people are met with wrongful convictions. The Innocence Project, which works to free these innocents and decrease the number of convictions in the US, has successfully exonerated over 200 people. Their clients had a collective 4,102 years worth of wrongful incarceration.

It’s a shame that one must appeal to innocence in order to give sympathy for those inside

There are the bodies of workers killed in an accidental dynamite explosion under the train tracks at Sprague and Division. This is a really good book.
This is the exact spot where 26 men simultaneously lost their lives at 5:45 pm on September 6,1890, when a railroad construction dynamite charge went off prematurelyOnly 15 bodies of dead workers were placed into the mass grave at greenwood. Some bodies of workers were completely destroyed by the blast at the site. The railroad crossing itself above and around the Ghost Intersection is their grave. A newspaper reporter at the time suggested that other (more or less) intact bodies might lay buried beneath the rubble that now forms part of the elevated railroad grade at the intersection, and will remain there until "careless spade exhumed the unhallowed remains." We know for a fact that over the last 125 years no spade - careless or otherwise - has dug that deeply below the railroad grade rubble to expose the remains. There is rage at the intersection of Dicision street and Sprague Avenue, and not just of the road rage variety. The rage at the ghost intersection is also spiritual and righteous. There is rage in the spirit world for the injustice of Guilded age labor almost amounting to slavery; rage doe the windows and orphans left destitute by an uncaring society; rage for the disposal of good men's bodies as if they were household refuge in a common pit; and rage for the desecration of other good men's places of death and eternal rest by the hustle and bustle of careless traffic through the ghost intersection. Be careful when you walk, drive or bicycle through the ghost intersection. Be very careful... and utter a small prayer for those who have passed on there before

If you have some time the article is well worth reading. Mothers day starting as a fairly radical anti war day of action is another one of those facts I forget and relearn every few years
Howe was a compassionate and well-educated middle child of an upper class family. She was also a poet who, in the early days of the Civil War, had written “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” using many biblically-based lyrics. Howe had intended her song to be sung as an abolitionist song; however, because of some of the militant-sounding lyrics and the eminently marchable tune, it was rapidly adopted by Union Army propagandists as its most inspiring war song, a reality that Howe likely regretted when the mass slaughter of the world’s first “total war” became clear to her.

Julia Ward Howe’s 1870 Mother’s Day Proclamation

“Arise then, women of this day! Arise, all women who have hearts, whether your baptism be of water or tears!

“Say firmly: ‘We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies.

“Our husbands shall not come to us, reeking with carnage, for caresses and applause.

“Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have taught them of charity, mercy and patienceJulia Ward Howe, author of the Mother’s Day Proclamation of 1870, was a life-long abolitionist and therefore, early on, she was a supporter of the Union Army’s anti-slavery rationale for going to war to prevent the pro-slavery politicians and industrialists in the Confederate South from seceding from the union over the slavery issue.

Learning more history from the ghost book
The first Exalted Ruler or lodge president of the Spokane Elks was Judge George Turner. The Judge, also a United States Senator was accused of buying his election with bribes and is credited singlehandedly with defeating women's suffrage in the state of Washington for the decade and a half prior to 1910 - but that is another story.
