Feel really privileged to have a MISHA from RIT for the week. Today I’m hanging out at the Sibley Music Library imaging some of their beautiful collection.

📢 Once more for the people in the back: - Most [more than 95%] of archives have not been digitized. - Most of humanity's knowledge and memory is *not* reachable by LLMs. - Believing that AI can provid you with comprehensive, definitive, "intelligent" results is folly.

Just a reminder that this project is partially funded by Elon Musk. Where money comes from matters. Remember that DOGE fired hundreds & cancelled grants for hundreds more. I just can’t care about a carbonized scroll when it’s funded by fascism. hyperallergic.com/why-is-there...

Hello folks who work with digitized manuscripts. What is your preferred metadata format? If you could get ONE, what would it be? TEI, Json, a spreadsheet, MARC, or something else? Please let me know and share this query! This is important!

Hey #medievalsky #manuscriptsky - do you have any examples of codices made into scrolls or rolls? Any genre.

Did some pickup shots to display the materiality of this gorgeous gradual, specifically: drypoint doodles, damage to the binding that allows a view into its structure, stitched repairs, and the texture of ink on the page. (RCL cod. e 2, Barbeau Gradual, Northern France, c. 1240-1260)

A little stop motion video I made of an almanac in the University of Rochester collection to try and give viewers an idea of how it functions 😊 (Video of RCL cod. a.1, a late 14th century folding almanac from England, likely Oxford)

While the near-total loss of the NEH is horrific, it has been death by a 1000 cuts for decades: the loss of summer seminars abroad, of postdoc funding, of all of the tiny bits of $ that enlightened K-12 teachers' & junior faculty's work & lives. Sarah & I will be mostly fine; the next gen won't.

Aside from the obvious direct harm, what's so irritating is that a handful of spoiled ignorant assholes are breaking things that we all built together. They weren't content to own almost everything, they had to wreck what little they didn't own. It's vandalism on a mass scale and has to be punished

Got to see some old friends under new light at the medieval manuscripts by (electric) candlelight event put on by the Robbins Library. Really incredible to see the illumination under the flicker of warm light after years of seeing things lit up in the lab.
Image of medieval manuscript open and sitting in a book cradle that is surrounded and lit by electric pillar candles. The book is basked in a warm glowy light from them.
