the reason i like them so much is because they make all the space between objectives that is not ‘part of the game’ suddenly very much part of the game. with the right timer design you can make a game about ‘slowly walking down a road’ a beloved classic (pathologic)

FYI the HUGE number of AI slop at GamesCom's opening night live is not a sign that the industry has normalized AI. It's a ploy to make you believe that. These games are all by the same 3 or 4 publishers. This is a concerted effort to make consumers accept AI.

Fundamentally I think videogames are a medium that (most of the time) gets worse the more the texture is obfuscated. It is not a medium where it's beneficial to hide the artist's hand; The details of the craft are more compelling than the artifice.
