Just re-upping this, for no particular reason at all. The Greens have got an essential role to play in the battle for the climate and equality. If they carry on like this they are going to get eaten alive from within. Snap out of it now, Greens! For everyone's sake.

Russia has a big problem. Its nuclear threats have declined in efficacy with use, and no-one in the West watches boring and scary mainstream news anyway. All the more reason to stage some sort of conventional provocation, which okay might be tolerable but might go wrong in a serious miscalculation.

Meanwhile demographic change, globalisation, immigration, increasing Europeanisation, the march of social liberalism and the rising tide of education left Tories stranded. But we're told we have to listen to their most hated ideas all the time! When we've heard nothing but for years! Er, no. (2/2)

Absolutely, tho those are the macro distortions. At the micro level absurd internal markets and terrible data that is often completely wrong massively compounds the decline given (1) blowing up stuff everyone can see is the best there - even within an HEI - and (2) destroying morale.

Of sur, those guys are just rubbish and a proper consultancy would make them look silly *at best*. But lack of any planning structures or ability to steer, and as Peter says sheer lack of cash, are the macro base.
010
Glen O'Hara @gsoh31.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
Sure, and the economics no longer make sense for even a moderately sized A&H dept if the central topslice is 40% to 50%. Really on that basis they should all shut. But also putting money while all English students increasingly go to just 10 unis would be a waste of cash also.

This is absolutely true. What’s more concerning is that Uni finance heads continue regardless. No one, and I repeat NO ONE, knows how much it costs to deliver a module or a programme at Exeter. We have shown them their errors, offered more realistic data, but agreeing with UCU would ruin accounting.

Glen O'Hara @gsoh31.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
Nor is cost control better. Basic accounting principles slurred, massive strategic decisions based on fundamental errors, swings in internal accounting that change who gets sacked for no reason but column % and addition. I cd make it say basically anything - Cardiff and Exeter just 2 examples. (2/2)

Universities, cont.: any high level data in most faculties will bear no resemblance to the school and field level data it summarises, and the university stats based on the faculty numbers will scramble and garble them again. Then the report to regulators will distort everything once more. (1/2)
