I've just spent a thoroughly enjoyable lazy Sunday afternoon binge-watching Ghosts. I've never watched it before - typically I think I saw half an episode about five years ago and wasn't that keen so never pursued it - but it is brilliant. Why didn't anyone INSIST on me watching it before now?

A few weeks ago a friend in London got wind that the late great Glenda Jackson's entire book collection was being thrown out that very moment (sob). Knowing I like books, GJ's acting and politics, she dashed round there and saved me this momento from the literal dustbin of history.

Also, years ago I once saw on a documentary a film from WW1 advertising war bonds. It was a parody of melodramas and I remember finding that surprisingly funny. I'd like to see it again and find out if my memory was correct.

I’ve just discovered that The Illustrated Police News continued into the 1930s as an even more lurid version of the Victorian original. So let’s share some no context badly-drawn sensationalism! First up, ‘ZOO OWNER ATTACKED BY PET BEAR AT SEVENOAKS’, 26 June 1930.
Line drawing of small bear attacking woman in zoo enclosure who tries to defend herself with a stick.

Colourful Roman glass cups decorated with animals from the Roman arena. Made in the AD 200s in Roman glass workshops in the Rhineland, they were found in ‘princely’ graves in Denmark, giving us a glimpse of how far Roman luxury goods travelled. National Museum of Denmark 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo collage shows four images of Roman short clear-glass cups painted with colourful enamel decoration depicting animals from the Roman Arena. Known as 'circus beakers', fourteen have been found in richly-furnished 'princely' graves in Denmark. The cups are dated AD 200s and were made in Roman glass workshops on the Rhine.

The top two images show two sides of the same cup

Top left: cup painted with a honey-coloured brown lion with shaggy mane viewed in profile facing right, its front and rear legs outstretched as if running at full speed

Top right: a bright green leopard with black spots viewed in profile facing left. It has a long curling tail. It’s front and rear legs are outstretched as if running. Out of shot, there is a blue goat which is being hunted down by the lion and the leopard

Bottom left: a fragmentary glass cup decorated with a light-brown lion with shaggy mane with black nose and a pink tongue

Bottom right: a standing gladiator with knee-length green leggings, cropped tunic top, and holding a blue shield, faces right towards a large brown bear seen in profile, The bear also faces right, as if moving away from the gladiator
