Interesting insights from this survey in Leeds. Topping the list of journeys people would find hard without a car are orbital ones: “Radial journeys in and out of the city centre are easy. Anything vaguely circumferential is impossible unless you go into the city and out again.” Same in Bristol.

Looking at Treasury guidance that all Departments should stop spending on anything which is not a priority. Sound reasonable? Worth remembering this pushes us towards what can be counted, being what counts. Also, that once everything is a priority, nothing is. Hoping this guidance has nuance...

With 60% of trips by bike, teens are the age group that cycle the most in the Netherlands—over 2,000 km. per capita per year. Rather than spend these years depending on parents and waiting for a driver’s license, they experience the autonomy promised by the car without its stress, danger, and cost.

Trucks have been getting bigger, more energy & space consuming, more polluting, and much deadlier to everyone around them including kids. Not because most of us actually need bigger vehicles, but as ego boosts, status symbols & “indicators of male virility.” Note the truck bed is basically the same.
Comparison of older and newer pick-up truck. Although the truck bed is essentially the same, the overall truck size is substantially larger and higher.

In amongst the debate on EV sales is the quiet truth that the average age of the fleet is rising and the replacement rate is falling. So our emissions reduction ambition is slowly diminished. It's not just about new EVs.
