Why should aviation get a bigger share of the carbon budget? Other sectors are decarbonising, but aviation is projected to become the UK’s largest emitting sector by 2040. Is this fair?

Sadly there was a climate & nature shaped hole at the heart of Burnham’s speech. Nothing on the benefits of nature restoration & same old words on a “pragmatic” approach to N Sea drilling. There’s nothing pragmatic about pouring fuel on a scorching earth - he should rule out Rosebank & Jackdaw now

WHERE DOES LABOUR STAND ON THE CLIMATE CRISIS?

ADRIAN RAMSAY
MP FOR WAVENEY VALLEY

"Miliband asked where each and every party stands on tackling the climate crisis.
The Green Party is unequivocal: it means no new drilling for oil and gas in the North Sea. It means no green light for a third runway at Heathrow. It means massive investment in our homes, green energy sources and transport in ways that both tackle the climate crisis and cut people’s bills.

So we ask Labour: where do you stand on these issues?"

Sustained economic growth can’t be achieved without a major boost to the purchasing power of the bottom 50% of the UK population. The govt can do so immediately by increasing income tax-free personal allowance by £3,000. All it needs to do is to end subsidies to commercial banks.

Putting climate firmly back at the centre of the UK’s political conversation. Zack Polanski tops the Politics & Government section of The Independent’s Climate 100 list.
ZACK POLANSKI NAMED THE UK’S TOP POLITICAL CLIMATE LEADER

The Independent write-up in full:

“Since becoming leader of the Green Party in 2025, Zack Polanski has made the links between climate change, inequality and the cost of living central to his politics, arguing that environmental action must also make people’s lives better.

This summer, as the UK faced its hottest summer ever and wildfires swept across the UK and the rest of the globe, he called for oil and gas companies to pay higher taxes to fund climate adaptation. That is alongside investment in cooling homes and public spaces and bringing water companies into public ownership.

More recently, he's taken aim at the rapid expansion of AI data centres, calling for a halt to new developments because of their huge demands for electricity and water at a time of increasing climate pressure. The Greens have proposed a moratorium on all but small, community-focused centres.

Polanski describes his approach as ‘eco-populist’, seeking to connect environmental concerns with frustrations over housing, bills and wealth inequality. His rise has helped propel the Greens into their strongest electoral position yet – and put climate politics firmly back at the centre of Britain’s political conversation.”

Lowering fuel taxes when supply is tight is stupid policy: it keeps demand and prices artificially high, most of it ends up with those who don't need support, and in the end, it's a money transfer from people who use little or no fuel to people who use a lot, e.g. SUV owners.

No. There are many ways to cut taxes and to stimulate the economy, that would be more effective, and more equitable, than cutting fuel duty. Cutting fuel duty encourages greenhouse gas emissions more damagingly than any other fiscal stimulus. # jointhegreenparty
