States + localities need not wait for Dems to retake control of the federal govt in order to generate substantial more credit + revenue. But the best part of the Loop: it would weaken markets' power to block "unprofitable" public investments by bypassing markets entirely. bsky.app/profile/mone...

Saule Omarova's proposed National Investment Authority—basically a national public option for financing public-interest projects—is excellent but depends on federal action. @moneyontheleft.bsky.social's Loop, however, shows how states can create fiscal capacity even without federal currency power.

interesting that conservatives were militantly “we must reward hustle” when the target was affirmative action at elite universities and now, when faced with the success of south asians and other groups, it is “i think we are too meritocratic”

Gift because it doesn’t mean displacing something else to have more schools, as zero sum budgeting might make it appear
030
Will Beaman @greenbackbetter.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
To add to your addition… We might need more schools, more infrastructure, etc. The paradox is that the “more” comes from inside the seemingly scarce world, not from some elsewhere. Not to be all theological up in here but it’s what the medieval scholastics called “the gift.”

Will Beaman @greenbackbetter.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
A point about scarcity… if some social product exists to be seemingly “used up” in a zero sum way, then its production is ongoing. Everything is produced rather than given, the rate/scale of its production can be dilated over time.

I think "message discipline" circulates while meaning a few different things. If it's code for "civil rights are a distraction from kitchen table issues"—which it seems to be for both Pod Save America and the Jacobin set—then I'm not crazy about that.

The right to exit is politically important and paradoxically has to be provisioned. What options await you when you exit? How does your exit affect others? These are the questions we cannot “exit” and they are essential for relative exits to be possible.

Employment is an infrastructure of recognition, participation and accountability but it is not the only one. I also believe housing should be decommodified. But if UBI is the full vision you have to have some theory of who makes the life that it purchases piecemeal in the neoliberal marketplace.
110
Will Beaman @greenbackbetter.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
The frontier demonstrates more than any example I can think of that there is no “external” position that is totally innocent. Exit happens within dependence and has to be provisioned too.
200
Will Beaman @greenbackbetter.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
But *none* of that means that social obligation itself is coercion, or that UBI supplies an adequate institutional theory of freedom. And the frontier imaginary is especially revealing because it historically depended on tons of public mediations and labors that it didn’t acknowledge.

Will Beaman @greenbackbetter.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I *agree* that employers should not have the authority to decide the social value of everyone’s contributions. I also agree that people need the material capacity to rest, play, care for themselves, and be “unproductive” as employers define it.

When Bernie released his proposal to regulate AI, I was glad to see many recognize that public ownership stakes would problematically tie the public's success to the industry's success. We must now understand, as @moneyontheleft.bsky.social does, that this criticism applies also to taxing the rich.

Whether it's mortgage-backed securities or AI, Wall Street's investments must not + need not be something NYC's public depends on. That is why taxing the rich will never ultimately be enough. We can and must redesign public finance so that the public no longer depends on private markets or wealth.

A public option for work does the same

If I voluntarily become a nurse, I have subsequently acquired obligations to patients that cannot be reduced moment-by-moment to whether I feel like continuing to help them. If I voluntarily have sex, I can withdraw consent and make it stop. So this is a category error.
120
Will Beaman @greenbackbetter.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Comparing social obligation to compulsory sex only works if you assume in advance that social obligation is inherently a violation. That's exactly the individualist premise I'm rejecting. It's pretty offensive, honestly. I know you're being serious, but wow.
220
Will Beaman @greenbackbetter.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
And finally the broader point is that a UBI can redistribute claims on the world as it exists now. Changing the world—building something new—requires institutions that can organize collective obligation. Employment doesn't exhaust this, and I'm not even against UBI, but obligations matter.

Also, saying "feeling needed is fine" trivializes the experience of exclusion and invisibility by locating it in the imagination of the person who is excluded and invisible.

It's true that money buys power. But from an organizing perspective, it's much more useful to think of the opposite: Wealth isn't a precondition to power; it's a consequence of the power relations that determine who gets money. Reorganizing the rules of those relations is the many's main power.

Reconstruction after Trump cannot be held up by the Democratic Party prioritizing the GOP's viability as an opposition party. And likewise progressive Dems cannot prioritize keeping their governing arrangements and promises to centrist Dems intact.

Will Beaman @greenbackbetter.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Progressive Dems will need to move in coalition with the moderate bloc at times, but as long as the moderate bloc is structurally important Trump will not be held accountable. The relative viability and indispensability of the moderate bloc at this time is the whole problem.

A leftist or progressive US government could create a federal job guarantee with public credit creation circuits, and formalize ongoing balance of payments support for other countries pursuing the same but who are currently bullied by dollar-denominated costs into administering austerity.
