When I started my postdoc, only 10 genomes were available for an estimated 100,000 species of diatoms. To fill this gap, we present the 100 Diatom Genomes Project, out now in PLOS Biology. Analyzing the first assemblies suggests that we will double the diatom gene space by the end of the project! 📈

Nice piece on the effect of invasive mussels on #GreatLakes food webs and fish, but mussels have not "helped clean the lake system of phosphates..."; they've just re-distributed them to the benthos, fueling benthic algae.

NOAA's AQI model for 8 am Thu shows Brown ("Hazardous") AQI from smoke in the NYC, Detroit, Milwaukee, and Cleveland metro areas. These conditions (if they verify, remember forecasting smoke is HARD!) will likely last only for a few hours, but you don't want to be outside without an N95 mask! (7/8)
