Few kids play outside in the street anymore, because streets are designed for cars, and parents are afraid their kids will get hurt. This fear isn't unfounded: "Road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death for children and young adults aged 5–29 years, according to World Health Organization"

Another story about a pedestrian who was hit by an e-scooter user and whose life was "drastically changed". In 2018, Mark Smith was hit by an e-scooter user and hurt his shoulder. Since then, he has had several treatments including surgery, but his shoulder is painful and hasn't fully recovered.

Ron Ross has been leading Tuesday Lunchtime Walks with Living Streets Aotearoa Wellington for 20 years! This series of lunchtime walks was started by Celia Wade-Brown in 2004. Ron took up the mantle of organiser in 2006 and recently passed the 20th anniversary of leading the walks.

We agree completely with Blind Low Vision NZ that e-scooters should not be used on the footpath. A recent law change allows them to be ridden in cycle lanes, but it doesn't go far enough to protect pedestrians.

Areas where fewer people drive for their commutes and drive less distance also have fewer transport fatalities per capita. This is relatively self-explanatory, but great to have evidence that supports this between correlation between lower car use and safer streets.

Car-free streets are not only safer for people walking and cycling, but they are also better for public health because they reduce air pollution and noise pollution. This is supported by a recent study of a street in Canada that is closed to car traffic during certain hours on summer weekends.

This story shows the importance of letting kids be independent and learn to navigate on their own. In this case, the young son of the author got lost while on vacation, but was able to navigate back to the motel where they were staying by using the landmark of the Wind Wand in New Plymouth.
