This suffering persists not for lack of solutions, but because enormous wealth and power are invested in maintaining the very structures that produce it. 212192863

Grace Hill @gracehill.bsky.social · 09/10/2026Infants are interesting and discerning. They will not be fooled by daddy’s voice reading the story from a screen vs sitting on daddy’s lap and interacting while daddy reads a board book. Those are different experiences and anyone who thinks they’re interchangeable is wrong. 010
Grace Hill @gracehill.bsky.social · 09/10/2026There is a whole body of study and research about attention, linguistics, and child development in the early childhood years. Research is pretty fucking clear that early childhood is not a time to outsource infant verbal development to an iPad, or an LLM with a voice model. It doesn’t work! 100
Grace Hill @gracehill.bsky.social · 09/10/2026BTW, the term of art for reading to a baby or toddler while cuddling and talking about the book is “joint attention.” You’re creating the habit of them directing their attention to the item you are also attending to, which is critical for later educational purposes. 150
