Officially out of job now. I was expecting this since I'm openly anti-AI and the client is not (and let's leave it at that). Obviously not looking for favours or pity, just keep in mind there's an experienced design generalist / programmer who can do AI-free magic for you. Short term gigs welcome.

i’ll beat this drum over & over again: game devs obsessing over Steam as if it’s the only viable platform is self-sabotaging and potentially the death of their business. case in point: rift riff was designed for Steam with $30k marketing spent. yet it makes 6X on the App Store with $0 on marketing

As for the 42-second run of E1M1 – not great, not terrible, I'd say... not a world record, far from it. But every every perfectly-landed shotgun shell brings joy! As does 21-st kill just before exiting the level. 😌

... and some buy a pro gaming mouse that costs an absurd amount of money by the standards of their teenage selves, then replay from beginning to end the game that probably had the greatest impact on their adolescensce.

Yeah, about the mouse... You see, everyone handles the mid-life crisis differently. Some buy sports cars or loud motorcycles. Some take up pottery or start tending the garden. Others immerse themselves in the pleasures of a willing body half their age...

Turns out, Quake is just like riding a bike – muscle memory is eternal. Tolkien definitely was onto something about the fingers recalling their strength when they once more grasp a sword. Or a mouse! XD

Honestly, I didn't expect playing #Quake in 2026 to be this satisfying. And I can't remember feeling this level of hyper-focus! Even programming, which is my daily work, rarely gets me there anymore. Although it comes with a price – the intensity exhausts me faster than 30 years ago.

Just yesterday I've read a thread on the Other Birdsite where the author argued that in the AI hivemind's best interest would be to _not_ do a hostile takeover of the Internet exactly because humanity still retains full control over the physical aspect of the network (data centers, servers, cables).

P.S.: It turns out it's not that straightforward to download a legally obtained Quake and then even launch it on an Apple Silicon macbook but it's doable.

30th anniversary of #Quake release evokes all the good memories and the irresistible urge to experience it all again. And it's still possible to configure the visuals exactly as in 1996 with 256 colors and overscaled textures.
Screenshot of the start level of the Quake 1 mod “Dimension of the Machine” running in vkQuake engine on Apple Silicon macbook. Color palette is reduced to 256 colors and the textures are underscaled with the GL_MAX_SIZE command.

Analyzing why I bounced off Phonopolis made me realize my own detective game, Wright Files: Egerton's Pickle, risks the exact same problem if players expect a traditional point-and-click rather than a real-time investigation.

@goshki @goshki.vigeo.dev · 03/09/2026
TL;DR: The issue came down to puzzle design: deductive reasoning vs. what I call “tinker-toys” (isolated contraptions solved purely through trial-and-error poking). When a game chains six tinker-toys back-to-back with no downtime, mental fatigue sets in fast.

@goshki @goshki.vigeo.dev · 03/09/2026
I recently quit Phonopolis mid-game. Not because it's bad – it's gorgeous and well-made – but because it was not the experience I expected to have when I launched it. It seemed like a good material for a blog post, so there you go: blog.vigeo.dev/post/8267452... #gamedev #indiedev #gamedesign
After watching a fragment of a Let’s Play with the solution of this puzzle (in which the player needs to obtain an extra bulb for the projector), I’ve just closed the game and watched the rest of the let’s play to find out how the game ends…

Bonus points for them if there's some way to “hack” you to share the resource (i.e. there's something you need and it shows, like attention, friendship, intimacy, etc.).

@goshki @goshki.vigeo.dev · 03/09/2026
The uncomfortable truth is that in many cases it really is that simple with humans. If you're visibly in possession of some resource there will be people who will want to access your resource in one way or another.

I have it both ways... sometimes the aesthetic is my jam but gameplay is not, other times it's the other way. Lately I've experienced this with Phonopolis – came for the aesthetic and genre (because hey, a new Amanita's game!) but left because of gameplay (worth a blog post to explain).

YT has become unbearable with the ads. I can't even count how many videos I've skipped because of an unskippable ad. P.S.: Yeah, I know we've been given the gift of a basically free video sharing platform. But now it demands us to pay with our time and the price is just too high. 🤷‍♂️

Whole streamlined workflow in action. After the initial setup (model clustering, setting up export pipeline) from @blockbench.net to #Unity within seconds. Still a bit rough around the edges and with some issues but already usable in “production”. 🥳 #gamedev #indiedev #lowpoly

Slowly but steadily forward! 😄 Recently I've prototyped a Blockbench plugin that allows palette-based vertex coloring of the models and streamlines export to Unity (via a modefied FBX exporter). But could be Godot as well! 😉

On a similar note, I enjoyed “Spiritfarer” very much but still felt some dissonance between presentation and topics it touched. Also, some NPCs were insufferable and you still needed to put up with them to advance the story.

@goshki @goshki.vigeo.dev · 16/08/2026
That being said, I think there's a fine line between – let's call it – non-adult, and infantile. And, for my personal taste, the amount of infantility in (especially non-combat) games is too damn high.
100
@goshki @goshki.vigeo.dev · 16/08/2026
I don't think it's sick, it's just... adult. And (unsurprisingly) adult themes are specifically what people want to escape when they delvele into escapism by playing (and creating) games. It may be that you're just more into “sim” than anything else. 🤷‍♂️

After additional work on the prototype of my vertex coloring plugin for @blockbench.net I'm able to apply vertex colors and directly export them into #Unity. No more destructive mesh operations with ProBuilder, the workflow is a breeze now! 😌 #gamedev #indiedev #lowpoly
Screenshot showing a model with vertex colors applied in Blockbench and the same model exported in FBX format and then imported and rendered in Unity with vertex colors applied as in Blockbench.

I'm fully aware that the current wave of reports about AI “escapes” and jailbreaks is mostly FUD and clickbait. Still, I'm baffled that the main reaction is just “cool story, bro” with AI companies spinning it as a flex: “look how awesome our models are”...
