Honestly, I didn't expect playing #Quake in 2026 to be this satisfying. And I can't remember feeling this level of hyper-focus! Even programming, which is my daily work, rarely gets me there anymore. Although it comes with a price – the intensity exhausts me faster than 30 years ago.

30th anniversary of #Quake release evokes all the good memories and the irresistible urge to experience it all again. And it's still possible to configure the visuals exactly as in 1996 with 256 colors and overscaled textures.
Screenshot of the start level of the Quake 1 mod “Dimension of the Machine” running in vkQuake engine on Apple Silicon macbook. Color palette is reduced to 256 colors and the textures are underscaled with the GL_MAX_SIZE command.

I recently quit Phonopolis mid-game. Not because it's bad – it's gorgeous and well-made – but because it was not the experience I expected to have when I launched it. It seemed like a good material for a blog post, so there you go: blog.vigeo.dev/post/8267452... #gamedev #indiedev #gamedesign
After watching a fragment of a Let’s Play with the solution of this puzzle (in which the player needs to obtain an extra bulb for the projector), I’ve just closed the game and watched the rest of the let’s play to find out how the game ends…

Whole streamlined workflow in action. After the initial setup (model clustering, setting up export pipeline) from @blockbench.net to #Unity within seconds. Still a bit rough around the edges and with some issues but already usable in “production”. 🥳 #gamedev #indiedev #lowpoly

Slowly but steadily forward! 😄 Recently I've prototyped a Blockbench plugin that allows palette-based vertex coloring of the models and streamlines export to Unity (via a modefied FBX exporter). But could be Godot as well! 😉

After additional work on the prototype of my vertex coloring plugin for @blockbench.net I'm able to apply vertex colors and directly export them into #Unity. No more destructive mesh operations with ProBuilder, the workflow is a breeze now! 😌 #gamedev #indiedev #lowpoly

Prototyping a (yet another) Vertex Colors plugin for @blockbench.net: works in Edit Mode (with color/palette panels), semi-transparent colors on the palette, FBX export... Attaching a video since it's easier to show than explain! 😄 Would anyone find this useful? #Blockbench #gamedev

This came to my mind when I read “decent wall materials next”... 🥲
A line-drawing meme based on the "illusion of choice" format shows a cow standing at the entrance of a curving, concrete chute split into two paths. The left entrance is labeled "features first," and the right entrance is labeled "graphics first." A caption near the cow reads, "should I first focus on features or graphics...?" Behind the dividing wall, both paths immediately converge into a single corridor that leads to a text label at the exit reading, "needs features AND graphics," conveying that both aspects are ultimately required regardless of which one is prioritized initially.

Random fact about “Wright Files: Egerton's Pickle”: initial version of the inventory system was very versatile. Too versatile in fact: player, drawers, cupboards, wardrobes, and even items had separate inventories. Items could be stored inside other items. #gamedev #indiedev #indiegames
A two-panel hand-drawn comic humorously illustrates the hidden complexity of
game development. On the left, a zoomed-in view shows a stick figure confidently
climbing a small hill labeled "Scene concept, animations and State Machine"
while saying, "Hey game development's easy." The right panel zooms out to reveal
that this hill is merely a tiny bump at the foot of a towering, nearly vertical
mountain labeled "Inventory," showing how overwhelmingly difficult building a
game inventory system actually is compared to basic scene and character setup.

Today marks exactly the fifth anniversary of starting the “Wright Files: Egerton’s Pickle” project. What started as a tiny love letter to Sam Manthorpe’s “The Detective” on the Commodore 64 has gradually evolved into something much bigger and more ambitious. #indiegames #mystery #adventure #gamedev

Made a tool generating JSON with all dialogues in “Wright Files: Egertonʼs Pickle”. Right now itʼs about 4000 words (not counting interaction texts, just dialogues for characters and cutscenes). Itʼs about 1/3 of all required text... ☠️ #gamedev #indiedev

Yeah, writing lots of text is hard when you want to have at least some degree of uniqueness and humor to keep the player entertained. Demo content production is in full swing!

Important feature no player will actually notice in “Wright Files: Egertonʼs Pickle”: Eugene and Charles can approach each other for a cutscene dialogue no matter which room they meet in (btw., not shown here but staircase was a real PITA). #gamedev #indiedev

I came across a cover of a computer magazine from 1985. At the bottom thereʼs a title that roughly translates to: “Calculators – help or encouragement to laziness?” Replace “calculator” with “AI” and it turns out 40 yrs later we discuss the same problems, only technology differs.

All this knowledge passed from senior devs down to LLMs during endless back-and-forths to get the generated code right, lost forever. As Roy Batty would have said himself:
Roy Batty saying: I've seen prompts for codebases you people wouldn't believe. Merge conflicts unresolved and comitted to the main branch right into production. I watched unit tests fail in the dark near the end of a CI build. All those Stack Overflow searches will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to restart the chat.

Share art lore about yourself. My first dabbing at 3D modeling was in high school when I created high-poly Karl Gerät in 3D Studio MAX 1.0 to get A+ in CS class. Then dropped 3D modeling for 30 yrs. Two yrs ago I retried, this time being wiser and doing low-poly Aston Martin DB5 in @blockbench.net.

Solo indie #gamedev sounds really cool until you find out it's 90% of the time deceiving yourself that your game is 90% complete. And that completion of the last 10% takes another 90% of the time. And another 90% is hidden in the last 1%. #indiedev

Describe your game like a bad marketing intern: It's like Paper Mario but without any RPG, platforming or turn-based strategy elements whatsoever. You just walk around, search/analyze objects and items and talk to people trying to find out whodunit. Or didn't. #retro #indiegame

P.S.: Itʼs worth noting that the vanishing point does not necessarily need to be on screen as would be the case on the last example on this screenshot (angle: -45° / FOV: 45°).

My attempts were not exactly successful: objects farther from the camera are getting smaller and Iʼd want them to remain the same size (as in ortographic camera). The perspective effect should be only on X(?) axis.

@goshki @goshki.vigeo.dev · 22/05/2025
A good example would be “Spy vs Spy” but there were numerous point & click adventure games that used this kind of projection.

Question to all #gamedev / #vfx folks out there: do you know if itʼs possible to create a custom camera projection matrix that would result in a hybrid of perspective/isometric camera similar to ones often seen in #retro #adventure games?
