Here in Oregon, leaders like @tinakotek.bsky.social and @melaniekebler.bsky.social are doing just that - they've been great on housing reform - and they need our support

The whole notion of "change" from @tinakotek.bsky.social 's opponent is based on the notion that Dems don't change their own policies. That's not true at all. Governor Kotek's housing policy is different, and much better than many of her predecessors, for instance bendyimby.com/2026/09/21/2...

We don't have to choose between filtering and building affordable housing. 🏠 We need both. Build affordable homes directly. Build more market-rate homes. Legalize ADUs, duplexes, starter homes, and small apartments. We need to say yes to ALL kinds of housing.

Thread, with a question: I've been thinking about cost recovery for off-site infrastructure upgrades required of developers, particularly of infill housing where most of the benefit of the upgrade isn't captured by the developer themselves.

Not sure it’s residential sprawl so much as fire country expansion. Regardless it will speed the insurance affordability crisis that is already hitting other parts of the country.

A 100-home Columbus apartment building needed 100 parking spots in 1954. By 2022, the same building needed 150, with no clear reason why. Rules like that make housing pricier to build. Since 2019, 14 states have passed 34 laws cutting parking minimums. stateline.org/2026/07/08/t...

Living in a smaller city that cannot solve all the west coast housing crisis on its own, it's really important to see reforms happening all over. They won't all happen at the same time, but it's good to momentum behind what we're all working towards

An enormous problem here in Oregon as well. There were some reforms proposed in this past session but they never made it to the floor. Condos are important cogs that fit the needs of many different types of buyers and we simply haven’t been building them for years.

A lot of people assume that the housing market circa 1975-2005, when urban housing was cheap even without new development thanks to rapid sprawl and white flight, is the natural state of the world and not an historically anomalous period shaped by housing and transportation policy choices.

Per @kaerdmann: when construction can't keep up with demand, housing prices decouple from incomes. Coastal cities got there through zoning restrictions. Post-2008 mortgage rules dragged inland cities like Atlanta into the same spiral. kevinerdmann.substack.com/p/facets-of-...

Some claim homebuilders just stop building before prices fall, so supply won’t cut prices. Auckland shows the way out of this trap: if you make homes cheaper to build (for example by letting people share land, pipes & roofs with each other) construction continues right on through lower prices.

People get hung up on supply and demand with housing because the build out and effects take so long that they can’t equate the two. But the impacts are indeed real, especially at those pesky workforce price points.

Historic preservationists should not be allowed to tell people what colors they can paint their houses. If a law mandating historically accurate paint had been in effect in the 60s, San Francisco would never have gotten our iconic Painted Ladies, and how sad would that have been?
Nicole "Coley" Sohn and Linda Bagley-Sohn painted 12 pickets of the fence in rainbow colors after the city complied with Gov. Ron DeSantis's
(R) directive to eliminate the rainbow intersections. Their protest inspired others around the city to do the same, resulting in threats of a $250-per-day fine for anyone who did not return their fences to white, the only color allowed on wood fences by the Key West Historic Architectural Review Commission (HARC).The painted ladies and the large apartment building next to them facing Alamo Square. A blue and white Victorian apartment building next to a purple one and a yellow and orange one. Ornate Victorian homes with wild paint jobs in red, brown, gold, green, and mint.

A new law in Idaho will force cities to allow homes on 1,500-square-foot lots, with the goal of bringing down home prices and preserving agricultural lands.

For 45 years, Berkeley built virtually no new housing. By the mid-2010s, it was one of the most expensive college towns in America. Around that time, YIMBYs took over and kicked off a building boom. Today, rents are below 2018 levels in nominal terms—a remarkable case of progress on affordability.
