Here in Oregon, leaders like @tinakotek.bsky.social and @melaniekebler.bsky.social are doing just that - they've been great on housing reform - and they need our support

The whole notion of "change" from @tinakotek.bsky.social 's opponent is based on the notion that Dems don't change their own policies. That's not true at all. Governor Kotek's housing policy is different, and much better than many of her predecessors, for instance bendyimby.com/2026/09/21/2...

Many people who are not in the weeds of often obscure and nerdy housing policy do not know about Governor Kotek’s housing record. As Speaker of the Oregon House in 2019, she was responsible f…

We don't have to choose between filtering and building affordable housing. 🏠 We need both. Build affordable homes directly. Build more market-rate homes. Legalize ADUs, duplexes, starter homes, and small apartments. We need to say yes to ALL kinds of housing.

Thread, with a question: I've been thinking about cost recovery for off-site infrastructure upgrades required of developers, particularly of infill housing where most of the benefit of the upgrade isn't captured by the developer themselves.

Not sure it’s residential sprawl so much as fire country expansion. Regardless it will speed the insurance affordability crisis that is already hitting other parts of the country.

A 100-home Columbus apartment building needed 100 parking spots in 1954. By 2022, the same building needed 150, with no clear reason why. Rules like that make housing pricier to build. Since 2019, 14 states have passed 34 laws cutting parking minimums. stateline.org/2026/07/08/t...

Why are so many people preoccupied with defending “socialism” and “communism” right now when we have decades of experience demonstrating that the definitions of the words are absolutely immaterial to those using them as an attack?

Living in a smaller city that cannot solve all the west coast housing crisis on its own, it's really important to see reforms happening all over. They won't all happen at the same time, but it's good to momentum behind what we're all working towards

Multiple conversations with different reporters: "why are housing prices so out of control in Oregon?" "we've got problems but actually, this is something Oregon is doing well at, here are the numbers" "huh OK well that's not a story I can tell. Nobody would care" Frustrating!

An enormous problem here in Oregon as well. There were some reforms proposed in this past session but they never made it to the floor. Condos are important cogs that fit the needs of many different types of buyers and we simply haven’t been building them for years.

Our position has long been that if drivers had to pay the full cost of their impact on the transportation system we’d have great transit and bike infrastructure. This is another example of the same. Also great videos!

A lot of people assume that the housing market circa 1975-2005, when urban housing was cheap even without new development thanks to rapid sprawl and white flight, is the natural state of the world and not an historically anomalous period shaped by housing and transportation policy choices.

Per @kaerdmann: when construction can't keep up with demand, housing prices decouple from incomes. Coastal cities got there through zoning restrictions. Post-2008 mortgage rules dragged inland cities like Atlanta into the same spiral. kevinerdmann.substack.com/p/facets-of-...

Remember, if our solutions for homelessness don’t start with more housing, we don’t really want to solve homelessness. And if you think building public/social housing costs too much, it costs much more public money to leave people unhoused. #UrbanTruth

Part of the reason the roads are lawless is precisely because losing your license isn’t a bad enough penalty in this country.

How is something that’s been the status quo for decades nonsense? We frequently take licenses away from DUII and reckless drivers yet they continue to drive and cause crashes. Americans writ large don’t want to follow rules of the road. Asset forfeiture would work, mostly.

Again, this isn’t painful enough for many Americans. Not having a license doesn’t keep them from driving. People who follow the rules, sure, but many are road scofflaws and simply don’t care.

It is disheartening to see one party hang its hat on the addiction/illness=homelessness trope. Even if they’re correct and it’s something they could “fix” where are these people going to live after they’re “healthy”?
