"They're not misunderstanding the film; they're co-opting a message"
Screencap from the interview linked in the quoted post

Marlow Stern (the interviewer): You have one of the most renowned replies in Twitter history. Elon Musk tweeted out, “Take the red pill,” then Ivanka Trump enthusiastically wrote, “Taken!” to him, and then you replied, “Fuck both of you.” I’m curious how you feel about the co-opting of “The Matrix” by those on the right who don’t really seem to understand its messaging.

Lilly Wachowski: I mean, I can’t sit in a room and explain the movie to every single person who watches it. Even if I did sit in a room with Elon Musk and Ivanka Trump — yikes — it doesn’t matter. They’re not misunderstanding the film; they’re co-opting a message. And that’s what fascists do: They co-opt the messages of progressives and use it to their benefit to confuse and obfuscate what is going on and the intention of their ideology. They do it with everything. They do it with Martin Luther King Jr. Look at how they’ve changed the idea of what antisemitism is.

I’ve really enjoyed Capcom’s 2026 games, esp. the ”sad dad” trope withering away. Still very cishet male, but we’ve had “protective older (adopted) brother” (Pragmata), “cool uncle that lets you shoot his gun“ (RE: Requiem), and now “standoffish son-in-law inherits family business” (Onimusha) vibes.

Isolation. 2026. Digital mixed medium.

A shadowy human figure peering out through a long vertical hole in a broken wall of horizontal wooden planks. Their skin is dark blue and resembles rough stone. Their eyes are bloodshot and express fear. The wood planks are shades of blue as if cold except for near the face which is light red. A light snow is falling.

I’m writing fantasy-horror novelettes/novellas in a sword-and-sorcery vein. Nothing set, but who are some artists (inc yourself!) I might commission for covers? Each is about the same central character, but each POV is a different character. (Think multiple Watsons with one Conan-Sherlock)

Cheat code for creatives: if you let your personal sadness and genuine soul-deep horniness into your art, it's pretty much immune to being co-opted by modern fascists, who focus mainly on selling a wholesome heartland that they can use as an excuse for violence they'll label as glory.

Color photo of author Charlotte Tierney, a fair-skinned woman with long, dark hair worn straight and parted on the side. She wears a striped crewneck top and gold hoop earring. She poses in front of a bookshelf in a well-lit room and smiles into the camera with warmth and perhaps a touch of mischief.Color photo of author Jeffrey Ford, a fair-skinned man with graying hair in a receding hairline. He wears metal-framed glasses and a black T-shirt with a design of a wizard (?) printed in green. He sits in a busy restaurant and sips a pale, opaque liquid from a small, stemmed glass. His expression might be alarm, but is probably just surprise or concentration on the beverage. Probably.
