Me: "I need to write a story about a haunted mansion to perform for a reading next week. The time allotted is short, so every word has to count." Also me: Puts in a deez nuts joke related to Simonides of Ceos and the Method of Loci as part of the page of prefatory remarks.

"They're not misunderstanding the film; they're co-opting a message"
Screencap from the interview linked in the quoted post

Marlow Stern (the interviewer): You have one of the most renowned replies in Twitter history. Elon Musk tweeted out, “Take the red pill,” then Ivanka Trump enthusiastically wrote, “Taken!” to him, and then you replied, “Fuck both of you.” I’m curious how you feel about the co-opting of “The Matrix” by those on the right who don’t really seem to understand its messaging.

Lilly Wachowski: I mean, I can’t sit in a room and explain the movie to every single person who watches it. Even if I did sit in a room with Elon Musk and Ivanka Trump — yikes — it doesn’t matter. They’re not misunderstanding the film; they’re co-opting a message. And that’s what fascists do: They co-opt the messages of progressives and use it to their benefit to confuse and obfuscate what is going on and the intention of their ideology. They do it with everything. They do it with Martin Luther King Jr. Look at how they’ve changed the idea of what antisemitism is.

The premise of putting together a magazine from the clip drawer also was a really great way to capture the feel of “found footage” in text (and pictures). I really recommend it.

I liked “About a Place” a lot! It gave me some good ol’ chills and was creepy fun. I‘ve not read other contemporary / recent Japanese horror, but it scratched the same itch as good j-horror movies for me.

It went like: Sees a post about William Shatner in Star Trek - “Oh he was fun is Miss C. Not a big role, but leaned in.” Sees a post about Marisa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny - “She was pretty great. I wonder what she’s been up to lately. Oh, something big. Marvel? Aunt May, right? Oh — OH!”

I’ve really enjoyed Capcom’s 2026 games, esp. the ”sad dad” trope withering away. Still very cishet male, but we’ve had “protective older (adopted) brother” (Pragmata), “cool uncle that lets you shoot his gun“ (RE: Requiem), and now “standoffish son-in-law inherits family business” (Onimusha) vibes.

eating
officers
so l asked
how many
officers
he has and he said
he just goes to the internet and gets
a new officer afterwards so I said it sounds like he's just feeding officers to the HWA and then the writers
started crying.

My *local* HWA chapter (Seattle) is really good about finding and creating local events to connect local writers with the public. Readings, library events, tabling at cons, etc. Personally, I also like being an HWA mentor b/c it’s a way to do that within set guidelines and expectations.

I just started (120 pages *is* just starting!) Steven Erikson’s Malazan Book of the Fallen series. It’s very much my kind of fantasy, but I’m surprised at how often billed as “difficult.” It’s not BotNS or even Black Company, which has a warped wall of a 1st chapter. Just be literate and curious!
