Celebrating the Snark's 150th anniversary with a Haskell truth checker: What I tell you three times is true!

https://www.reddit.com/r/LewisCarroll/comments/1s6u2ty/celebrating_the_snarks_150th_anniversary_with_a/

----

Today (March 29th, 2026) we can start to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Lewis Carroll and Henry Holiday's "The Hunting of the Snark". Carroll distributed first editions of his Snark tragicomedy to selected friends and family before the official publication date. Macmillan officially published the poem on April 1st, 1876, but Carroll prepared 80 presentation copies on March 29th, 1876, many of which he signed and gave away.

On occasion of the 150th anniversary of Carroll's long Snark poem and Holiday's Snark illustrations, I now provide you with a tool for which our snarked world has been waiting since the big bang (or even earlier). The tool checks assertions in a table of assertionsbased on the Bellman's rule: "What I tell you three times is true!". The function atLeastThrice yields all assertions which it can find at least three times in the assertions table.

The function uses a fact checking algorithm which also is used by the most powerful leaders of the world.

The function makes fact checking great again.
The function makes fact checking great again.
The function makes fact checking great again.

Here is my implementation of "What I tell you three times is true" in Haskell:

    atLeastThrice :: [String] -> [String]
    atLeastThrice assertions =
      [head grp | grp <-
group $ sort assertions, length grp >= 3]

ChatGPT's explanation of atLeastThrice: "Thank you for providing the implementation in Haskell. Yes, your implementation looks correct. The "group" function groups the same elements in the list together, then you are filtering out the groups that have less than three elements, and finally returning the head of each group (which is the repeated assertion)."

Today I used @proton.me's Lumo AI for the first time. I had some questions about "The Hunting of the Snark". Without having been asked, Lumo told me that in snrk.de/snarkhunt a date 1897-12-01 is inconsistent with the correct date 1897-01-12 in my Snark blog. I corrected the error. Kudos to Lumo.
[...] Second, one page on your own site (snrk.de/snarkhunt) dates the letter as 1897-12-01, which looks like a day/month transposition of the January 12 date your main page and Wikipedia give — possibly worth a look if you want consistency across your pages. [...]

This is a detail from "The Temptation of St. Anthony" (c. 1512-1516) by Matthias Grünewald (Mathis Gothardt Neithardt). There is a hidden devil's face in the painting. It is quite large, because it is composed of several objects depicted in the painting. Blurring (https://snrk.de/blur/) the painting a little bit helps to spot the hidden face.

The inside of Bodley’s Belfry contains a wooden structure which (according to C.L. Dodgson) inspired the design of bathing-machines made by two builders at Ramsgate (snrk.de/page_the-new...).
In 1872, the Christ Church College Cathedral belfry showed damages which made it necessary to rehouse its bells elsewhere. Driven by Dean Henry George Liddel, the New Belfry project started in 1872. The new bell tower was to be placed at the top right corner of Tom Quad, above the staircase to the dining hall. Alas, money run out and a very simple big wooden cube served as the new temporary belfry. It was so simple that C.L. Dodgson associated it with, among other shapes, a new design pattern for bonnet-boxes and bathing-machines. Later that economy belfry shyly went into hiding behind the walls of George Frederick Bodley’s belfry built from 1876 to 1879. Inside the belfry the wooden structure still can be seen.

An excerpt from Dodgson’s Oxford squib The New Belfry of Christ Church where “Bathing-machines” are mentioned:
Ǥ 7. On the impetus given to Art in England by the new Belfry, Ch. Ch.
The idea has spread far and wide, and is rapidly pervading all branches of manufacture. Already an enterprising maker of bonnet-boxes is advertising ‘the Belfry pattern’: two builders of bathing-machines at Ramsgate have followed his example: one of the great London houses is supplying ‘bar-soap’ cut in the same striking and symmetrical form: and we are credibly informed that Borwick’s Baking Powder and Thorley’s Food for Cattle are now sold in no other shape.»

Some lines and an illustration from 'The Hunting of the Snark' (1876) by Lewis Carroll and Henry Holiday, snrk.de/snarkhunt
001 “Just the place for a Snark!” the Bellman cried,
002  As he landed his crew with care;
003 Supporting each man on the top of the tide
004 By a finger entwined in his hair.

005 “Just the place for a Snark! I have said it twice:
006 That alone should encourage the crew.
007 Just the place for a Snark! I have said it thrice:
008 What I tell you three times is true.”

113 Then the bowsprit got mixed with the rudder sometimes:
114 A thing, as the Bellman remarked,
115 That frequently happens in tropical climes,
116 When a vessel is, so to speak, “snarked.”

117 But the principal failing occurred in the sailing,
118 And the Bellman, perplexed and distressed,
119 Said he had hoped, at least, when the wind blew due East,
120 That the ship would not travel due West!

105 This was charming, no doubt; but they shortly found out
106 That the Captain they trusted so well
107 Had only one notion for crossing the ocean,
108 And that was to tingle his bell.

Trump and Rubio as the walrus and the carpenter from the poem by Lewis Carrol with the words: the time has come the walrus said, to speak of many things...

In the background, the cliffs across the sea are labelled Epstein Island
