#Pareidolia also is a nice tool which artists can use to annoy art critics. If they "see" hidden objects in paintings and illustrations, embarrassment is nigh. To be on the safe side, you better don't see deniable objects in images.

#Pareidolia Rachel Gordon, does @csail.mit.edu (MIT CSAIL) have tools which could help @snarkhunt.bsky.social (that's another of my accounts) to find more allusions in Henry Holiday's Snark illustrations (see also snrk.de) or in other art? ※ news.mit.edu/2024/ai-pare... ※ snrk.de/playing-with...

AI pareidolia: Can machines spot faces in inanimate objects?
New dataset of “illusory” faces reveals differences between human and algorithmic face detection, links to animal face recognition, and a formula predicting where people most often perceive faces.

#blurring #blurred Sometimes you need to see less in order to see more. Apply some #blur, then you might see "faces" where there are none to be seen with clear sight. But probably only few of them were designed intentionally to trigger #pareidolia. snrk.de/blur/#Hidden...

Blurring might help you to see things which you wouldn’t see with clear sight. It’s fine to try that with artwork which might have been intentionally created for such an exercise. But better make sure that it was an artist who created the face that is looking at you. I don’t know whether Mars ever has been inhabited by artists.

The World Through Blunted Sight:
An Inquiry into the Influence of Defective Vision on Art and Character

Patrick Trevor-Roper
Souvenir Press, 01.11.2012 - 300 pages

How did faulty or failing eyesight affect the style and technique of writers and artists. How did it affect the way they convey their visual impressions. In a classic study, first published in 1970 and thoroughly revised in 1988, Patrick Trevor-Roper combines his professional knowledge of ophthalmology with his extensive familiarity with art and literature to fascinatingly examine the work of painters, sculptors, poets and prose writers. Looking at the effects of myopia, cataracts, colour blindness, squints and total blindness he speculates on what the impact would have been on artists had they worn glasses. Illustrated with colour reproductions and a wealth of black and white photos, this was a true labour of love from a highly cultured man, erudite and stimulating.

This is a detail from "The Temptation of St. Anthony" (c. 1512-1516) by Matthias Grünewald (Mathis Gothardt Neithardt). Compared to the hidden devil in the painting, those demons are quite cute. The guides of the Musée Unterlinden are aware of the hidden face. But do they talk about it to visitors?

This is a detail from "The Temptation of St. Anthony" (c. 1512-1516) by Matthias Grünewald (Mathis Gothardt Neithardt). There is a hidden devil's face in the painting. It is quite large, because it is composed of several objects depicted in the painting. Blurring (https://snrk.de/blur/) the painting a little bit helps to spot the hidden face.

"The art of deniability" (@mahendra.bsky.social) When Henry Holiday illustrated Lewis Carroll's "The Hunting of the Snark" (1876), his playing with the pareidolia of the beholders of his illustrations allows him to hold them responsible for the things (especially the long ones) which they "see".
"Ceci n'est pas un cigar." (https://snrk.de/page_this-is-no-cigar)

Detail from Henry Holiday's illustration to the last fit (chapter) of Lewis Carroll's "The Hunting of the Snark" showing a simulacrum about which, as far as I know, until now no AI based image content checker complained. And here I mean the simulacrum on the lower left side of the illustration and not the "torso-like simulacrum" (see https://snrk.de/page_this-is-no-cigar/#Tufail) on the lower right side.

Holiday's dark illustration (https://snrk.de/snarkhunt/#561) to the 8th fit of Lewis Carroll's "The Hunting of the Snark" is quite challenging. He found a way to hold the beholders of his illustrations responsible for what they "see".

Holiday migth have gotten some ideas from his teacher John Everett Millais (https://snrk.de/page_lorenzo-and-isabella/).

"We have neglected the gift of comprehending things through our senses. Concept is divorced from percept, and thought moves among abstractions. Our eyes have been reduced to instruments with which to identify and to measure; hence we suffer a paucity of ideas that can be expressed in images and an incapacity to discover meaning in what we see. Naturally we feel lost in the presence of objects that make sense only to undiluted vision, and we seek refuge in the more familiar medium of words. […] The inborn capacity to understand through the eyes has been put to sleep and must be reawakened."

"Look at walls splashed with a number of stains, or stones of various mixed colours. If you have to invent some scene, you can see there resemblances to a number of landscapes, adorned with mountains, rivers, rocks, trees, great plains, valleys and hills, in various ways. Also you can see various battles, and lively postures of strange figures, expressions on faces, costumes and an infinite number of things, which you can reduce to good integrated form. This happens on such walls and varicoloured stones, (which act) like the sound of bells, in whose peeling you can find every name and word that you can imagine.
Do not despise my opinion, when I remind you that it should not be hard for you to stop sometimes and look into the stains of walls, or the ashes of a fire, or clouds, or mud or like places, in which, if you consider them well, you may find really marvelous ideas. The mind of the painter is stimulated to new discoveries, the composition of battles of animals and men, various compositions of landscapes and monstrous things, such as devils and similar things, which may bring you honor, because by indistinct things the mind is stimulated to new inventions."

"[...] In 1976, Dali read a piece in Scientific American which claimed that the human eye could recognize an image with the minimum resolution of 16 x 16 (or 256 pixels). Below is the accompanying example in the magazine, which you will recognize as Abraham Lincoln.

Dali, who strikes me as sort of a brilliant jerk, called bullshit and set out to create a painting of lower resolution that could be recognized. His painting, shown below, used only 121 pixels.

Dali’s painting, when viewed up close, reveals an image of his wife, Gala, looking out of a window (hence the title, Gala Contemplating the Mediterranean Sea which at Twenty Meters Becomes the Portrait of Abraham Lincoln). But when viewed from afar (you guessed it: about 20 meters) you see the full image of Lincoln that Dali intended. For the last couple of days, I’ve struggled to keep the Lincoln view of what I’m working to accomplish. I know that I am painting Lincoln, but all I see is Gala.

But the reality is, I’m looking too closely at the work. I’ve got the canvas right up in front of my nose, and all I see is the micro view that makes up the macro view. It’s an easy trap to fall into. When you worry that your work isn’t accomplishing what you set out to do, take a step back (about 20 meters) and take another look. Sometimes you just get too close. [...]"

Isenheim Altarpiece, Inner wings opened, c. 1512-1516, by Matthias Grünewald (Mathis Gothardt Neithardt) Musée Unterlinden, Colmar, France Source: webmuseo.com/ws/musee-unt...
=== Saint Augustine and Guy Guers, Saint Anthony, Two Bearers of Offerings, Saint Jerome, Christ and the Twelve Apostles ===
With its inner wings open, the Altarpiece allowed pilgrims and the afflicted to venerate Saint Anthony, protector and healer of Saint Anthony’s fire. Saint Anthony occupies the place of honour at the centre of the corpus and at his side a pig is depicted, the emblem of the Antonite order. On his left and right, two bearers of offerings illustrate these contributions in kind, an important source of income for the Antonites. This central section is framed by Saint Augustine and Saint Jerome, two of the four great fathers of the Latin Church. Guy Guyers, who had commissioned the Altarpiece, is depicted kneeling at the feet of Saint Augustine.

=== Visit of Saint Anthony to Saint Paul the Hermit ===
The two hermits meet in a stunning landscape, intended to represent the Theban Desert. Grünewald created a fantastic universe, surrounding the date palm with a strange mixture of vegetation, in marked contrast with the calmness and tranquillity of the encounter, in which the animals in attendance take part, with the crow bringing two morsels of bread to the two recluses. In this dreamlike scene, medicinal plants, painted in naturalistic fashion, sprout at the feet of the two main figures.

=== Saint Anthony Tormented by Demons ===
This panel depicts Saint Anthony being tormented by monstrous creatures sent by Satan. Trampled to the ground, beaten with sticks, torn by claws and bitten, Saint Anthony appeals to God for help who sends angels to combat these evil demons. In the lower left corner, the being with webbed feet and a distended belly seems to personify the disease caused by ergot poisoning, resulting in swelling and ulcerous growths.

Later I found out that I was not the first one who spotted that head (https://snrk.de/how-gustave-dore-might-have-played-with-pareidolia/#head). Gustave Doré was faster (1863).
