Forests around the world are increasingly under stress caused by drought. Researchers at our Uni wanted to know how soil structure and landscape influence the health of trees. They studied beech trees in Germany: www.uni-goettingen.de/en/3240.html... Research in #Trees: doi.org/10.1007/s004...

However, there are dead spruce trees which look bare and grey (mainly visible top left-hand side top of the slope, but also throughout the forest), as well as groups of beech trees still with green leaves on the lower slopes. There is a smaller, dark brown bone and, above it, a larger, thicker, ochre-coloured bone – both photographed on a black background. The bones belong to the skeleton of straight-tusked elephant – the largest land mammal known to have roamed Europe. The surfaces of the bones are very sharp which shows they are exceptionally well preserved. There is a ruler (bottom left) in black and white which looks about 10cm long.
