Grandma Nutmeg pets Heathcliff, who's sitting on her lap. Heathcliff is holding up a megaphone, and his amplified purrs ring loudly through the room. Grandpa Nutmeg and Iggy watch, and Iggy says "No one pets him like Grandma."

Reading the second volume of Caro's LBJ biography and marveling at this observation (from the year I was born), which seems quaint in the year of our Lord 2026
From Robert Caro's The Means of Ascent: "It is difficult today to remember, much less...to understand, the extent to which 'the President'--any President--was then revered, respected, feared," Tom Wicker, who covered the White House for the New York Times, recalled in 1983. In times of foreign crisis, Wicker pointed out, the last two Presidents before Jounson, right or wrong, had been able to count on that reverence; Eisenhower after the U-2 incident, Kennedy" (continued in next image)Continued, from Caro's The Means of Ascent: "despite the Bay of Pigs; Kennedy, until the very day he died could be certain of the nation's loyalty, almost fealty, in summit confrontation or missile crisis. And therefore when, in late 1965 or early 1966, while accompanying President Johnson to a speech in New York, Wicker for the first time saw protesters passed behind police barricades shouting, 'Hey! Hey! LBJ! How many kids did you kill today?" the journalist says he 'could hardly believe my ears.'"

Do big chain casual restaurants (Chili’s and its ilk) still keep massive liquor bottle collections like they did 25 years ago when I was working in that space? I can’t justify buying a bottle of Drambuie but it would be nice to go to a bar and order a Rusty Nail.

It gets right down to what these facilities are built to do.
They're not like the mills and factories of an earlier America, which might have been ugly as sin and spewed smoke into the sky but at least provided jobs, woke up sleepy local economies, and made real products.
Instead, inside their gray walls, rows of processors nibble away at the world as we know it. They hum along, day and night, powering the Al models replacing human workers, filling the internet with slop, and facilitating mass surveillance.

Updating my AI Policy; the first paragraph I am obligated to copy and paste. The second paragraph is mine.
“Students may use AI tools to support and not bypass their learning, creativity and as an editing tool with teacher discretion, while maintaining academic integrity by not representing AI-generated content as their own work. Students should be able to describe how they used AI to support their own work. Students should understand the ethical, moral and environmental impact and that generative AI tools are not 100% accurate. Any AI-generated work submitted as one’s own is plagiarism and subject to consequences aligned with student code of conduct.”

Per the discretion this policy allows, understand that in my class we will NOT use ChatGPT, Grammarly, Google Translate, or any apps that perform similar functions. To learn more about some—not all—of my concerns regarding AI, start with this article, “The risks of AI in schools outweigh the benefits,” as reported by NPR in 2026.) Continue with this article, “Neighbors say noise from Michigan data center is 24/7 and upending their lives.” My pledge to you: I will not use AI in creating any material for class, visual, textual, or otherwise. In exchange, you will not use it, either.
