"extreme tail risk" = very low probability, but very high impact. The risk is the highest since we became a country, but it's still very low. Risk analysis usually looks at probability multiplied by impact for total risk. I doubt our government has never explored that possibility in detail before.

DoorDash spent $1.4M trying to stop Zohran Mamdani from becoming mayor. This week's historic $131.5M enforcement action against DoorDash for underpaying NYC delivery workers shows why. Yet another reminder that the only thing that can beat organized money is organized people.

The best and the brightest have headed south for decades. The only reason for a reverse flow is because of the destruction of their government. Deregulation, removing climate change policies and cutting funding to necessary watchdog government departments isn't the way to do it.

Canada, here is where the US is kicking our asses. We didn't create YouTube, or Amazon, or Google. We did create PornHub, Shopify and Verafin so large best in field digital companies can exist here. It's just very rare in Canada. Even the modern LLM was created in Canada.

They charge affordable prices, yet they pay well and their quality is better than overseas. It *is* possible to run a profitable business in Canada without paying your employees terrible wages.

It is a foothold for foundation level manufacturing and industry that Canada needs to rebuild. Their secret is software driven job management, able to give near instant and automated quotes, and queue up otherwise cost ineffective smaller jobs into much larger batch jobs, cutting per-order overhead.

@mark-carney.bsky.social Send Cut Send is a type of business that can easily exist in and needs to be in Canada. It accelerates and de-costs hobbyist projects, which can also be the embryo of new businesses (manufacturing or other) by offering one off jobs at very affordable prices.

I get really annoyed seeing so many people say "Since everyone uses AI to write papers..." or "Referee reports now are just written by AI..." Look: Everything I have written has, for better or worse, been my own writing. Don't project your cynical expectations on my work. Seriously, screw gen-AI.

I doubt there's an industry that's not operated in some fraction by furries. The fact that they are in an industry that demands the highest of operational safety is saying a lot for them. The fact that your government is directed by a large number of selfish billionaires is terrifying.

An attack on a country rarely if ever dislodges a government, but rather increases nationalism and thus support for it. This was seen in Iran, and now with the trade war against Canada, an administration that was about to topple is now seeing historic support.

Climate scientists say there is no going back. We can only mitigate the damage and the suffering. Summers are never going back to normal. It only gets hotter. We are out of time! Carney saying we can’t afford to deal with emissions until later is ignorance or a devastating lie. We have no choice!

We go down the slippery slope of eliminating the right to strike for some, while dismantling the environmental safeguards we have in place. I am for the elimination of red tape, but not at the cost of worker and environmental rights.

Seth from Berm Peak has created some fantastic pure traditional hacking videos. On e-bikes instead of standalone computers, but they embody what traditional hacking is all about. Figuring out how a system works, and usually fixing the problems the system had in the first place, and making it better.
