Change can be hard, but I think it's important to remember plenty of beloved institutions that seem ingrained in the fabric of Ann Arbor without were once new, and hated because they replaced something else that people loved

I've attended most of these meetings, but I still meet someone new every time. Maybe you or one of your friends can be one of the new folks this month. This group is laid-back, friendly, and curious.

Ann Arbor is one step closer to adding 343 affordable housing units to its housing stock.

Proposed Ann Arbor high-rise would be first 100% affordable building along Stadium and Maple corridor
If it clears zoning review, a 12-story building on West Liberty Street would become the first 100% affordable high-rise made possible by transit corridor rezoning in Ann Arbor, according to a city council member.

Excellent overview on how adding “luxury,” market rate housing also brings an increase in lower rent apartments via filtering, touching on debt service and how more supply is not the same as high supply. #a2council xcancel.com/jayparsons/s...

The most notorious landlord of Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor, Beal, just publicly endorsed #A2Council mayoral candidate Yousef Rabhi. #DSA members, do DSA candidates often get endorsed by slumlords? If they do get endorsed by slumlords, do they just roll with it, or refuse it? I'm confused.

Idle thought... Why do Ann Arborites say "Williams" Street but they don't say States or Thompsons or Maynards or Hills or Monroes? Are they pluralizing any other street names?

#a2council 🧵 Let's take a look at the actual short term rental numbers in Ann Arbor to see what it would cost to force these owners to move into their STRs or sell them

greg @gmatthews.bsky.social · 13/06/2026
Hearing #A2Council candidates say it's wrong we allow 3-400 short term rentals. This recognizes undersupply is the problem. So let's get smarter zoning to allow 1000s of new homes quickly. We even get 1000+ in some buildings! 1 building can have 3x the effect of forcing STR owners to sell.

Gorgeous day to ride to Destination Cyclery in Dexter, Michigan for some help with my bike. Highlights included watching a deer cross the river and a delightful brunch at Joe and Rosie's. Grateful for allergy meds, good trails, and a flexible work schedule.

Fenders where they should be, new back rack, and a high rise stemStrava map. Did an extra couple miles by passing the warnings that B2B is closed before Dexter. I wanted to see what was up. Then I had to loop back to HRD and take that into Dexter.

On this morning's commute, I saw so many people riding bikes for transportation, not recreation. They were all using the bike lanes. Bike parking was busy. This week, local Facebook groups are having a meltdown about bike infrastructure. They say nobody uses it. Get outside, people! #A2Council

#A2Council content. I am still perplexed by some mansion owners backing some DSA candidates. I hope DSA candidates vocally oppose exclusionary zoning and fight for more affordable housing of all types. We need all hands on deck! @moreneighborsa2.org

I'd say that this applies to anyone traveling in a car in any city. Being in a car versus walking, riding, or taking transit fundamentally changes how you view a place and your relationship to it. I wish more leaders set this kind of example. www.npr.org/2026/04/16/n...
Mamdani hasn't had time to really think about all that space he now has, because he spends most of his time at City Hall and around New York City. He tries to keep a semblance of his old life by getting around the city on foot, by bike or train.

"If you spend every single day driving around in a tinted window security detail, you will have a very specific view of the city," he said. "You actually meet other New Yorkers and you break out of the bubble that so many have come to expect of politics, where politicians only seem to be spending time with other politicians or the people who donated to make them politicians."

I just wrote a letter asking Planning Commission to implement rezoning with the urgency that our housing shortage deserves. It took less than a minute. Write yours here: actionnetwork.org/letters/2026... #A2Council
actionnetwork.org
Tell Planning Commission to Get Started
Planning Commission will consider a resolution to start implementing the Comprehensive Plan with zoning changes. As a first step, it calls for the commission to immediately start creating 1-2 new zoning districts for the Hub category and the Transition areas that surround Hub. The resolution asks staff to model the zoning changes on proposals made by members of the More Neighbors policy committee. This resolution is important for two reasons: Speed. It would direct planning staff to immediately begin implementing the comprehensive plan with broad reforms, rather than rezone a few small areas at a time at a slow pace. Quality of Reforms. By directing staff to model the reforms on the More Neighbors proposals, the resolution helps ensure that the new zoning districts will remove barriers to housing construction rather than add new ones.

Portland has a wonky secret to building cheaper houses. Other cities are copying.
Portland legalized fourplexes, tiny houses and backyard homes and then sorted out how to actually get them built.
