An update to the #cgalib game library is released! Improvements were made for the development of Star Cadre: Team Command, and the results of those are now available for other developers. Download the updated library and its manuals from cyningstan.itch.io/cgalib2 #ibmpc #msdos #cga #gamedev

How do computers calculate complicated trig functions such as tangent? I took a look at Intel's 8087 floating-point chip under the microscope to find out. The chip combines two techniques to evaluate the tan function quickly and accurately: polynomials and an algorithm called CORDIC...

A die photo of the 8087 chip under a microscope shows complex patterns from its transistors and wiring. The middle of the chip holds the microcode ROM, while the bottom half of the chip is the datapath that performs calculations. Zooming in on the datapath shows various functional blocks, which appear as rectangles with different textures. Important functional blocks are labeled: exponent ROM, constant ROM, shifter, adder, registers, and so forth.

A GreaseWeazle is a USB floppy controller. It allows capture of disk images at a very low level. This is only strictly needed for copy-protected or non-standard formats, but it can also be useful for data recovery with damaged media or such. github.com/keirf/grease...

if you have any rare commercial software you may want to get in contact with a nerd such as myself who has an older drive and a flux reader such as a GreaseWeazle who can make proper archival images.

this is a rabbit hole you can go down. 3.5" disks, if stored in reasonable conditions, are likely all still readable. USB floppy drives are still available to purchase, but they are kinda crap for doing anything other than backing up data.

Help me test some new features in mTCP NetDrive! This version has read-ahead and large writes to speed things up, especially on remote servers. WATTCP programs can now also run while NetDrive is active. See www.brutman.com/mTCP/mTCP_Ne... for details and how to download it. #retrocomputing #mtcp

it's the 70th anniversary of the IBM 305 RAMAC, the world's first hard drive! in celebration, here is a picture of a prototype RAMAC magnetic head.

nickel-sized round magnetic head with a tiny rectangular pole piece in the middle. it is mounted in a two-axis gimbal so it can rotate to align perfectly with the surface of the hard disk. on the back is a connection for an air line.
