More AI slamming the SERPs, but it might have gotten hit already with the spam update. Facebook Answers yields almost 6M urls indexed and looks to have surged like mad after the August spam update. And then surged heavily recently. But I cannot find any of those urls ranking in the SERPs.

I'm in an AIO test where the citations are stacked at the bottom of the answer on desktop. The right side citation bar is gone. And you can click 'Show all' to see a full list of citations at the bottom. IMO, those links look much more enticing down there. :)

XML sitemaps should contain all canonical urls and each url should contain an accurate lastmod date. I'm with Joost de Valk, many sites get this wrong. Back in the day I called them "dirty sitemaps". Now I just make sure clients understand what should be in those sitemaps and what should be left out

OK, Google finally nuked the shared notebook directory from the SERPs (which contained a ton of spam). They could have done this much sooner, but hey, better late than never. :) There were 16K+ urls indexed in that directory the last time I checked and it was increasing by thousands of urls per day.

Google is blocking scrapers in new ways. But here's the interesting part. I know 100% that certain sites dropped & some recovered with the 9/4 unconfirmed update. When checking one that dropped, and then fully recovered, here is what the big 3 tools show. ahrefs=ok, semrush=ok but lags, sistrix MIA.

Google started deindexing many PDFs at the end of the August. For some sites with a lot of PDFs ranking, finding which PDFs were actually deindexed could be challenging. That's where the power of APIs come in handy. My latest tutorial walks you through hunting those deindexed pdfs.

Tested a site with aggressive ads using the new CrUX ad detection tool. BTW, you should learn how the metrics are calculated to understand the numbers. E.g. For an ad count of 2.33, that's a pretty bad user experience. That's how many ads a typical user is seeing *at once* on the site.

A huge heads-up: I held off on sharing about this yesterday, but now there is overwhelming evidence. There was some unconfirmed update that Google released in early Sep (9/3 into 9/4) that hammered some websites. I've had a # of companies reach out to me about this and some have completely tanked.

Remember, robots.txt files are by subdomain and protocol. You can find times where there are different robots.txt files across www, non-www, http, or https. I surfaced that during an audit this summer for the www version of a site (and the site resolves with non-www). The site owner had no idea.

If you read my post about the August spam update, you saw many mentions of programmatic content. Be careful Programmatic SEO like this often leads to a site that's either spam, borderline spam, or low quality. It's easy to spin something up with many pages, it's hard to provide real value to users.

In mid-August, I shared that ChatGPT was hiding "view sources" in the overflow menu. Well, now I'm seeing a different treatment in the free version of ChatGPT. It's much better and sources are visible by default. But in my paid account, I still see sources hidden behind the overflow menu. See below.

Quick update on the .gov drops: irs.gov has recovered almost fully while fda.gov has not recovered at all. Interesting drops in Google Land. irs.gov looked like technical issues that were resolved, while fda.gov seemed like something different... Both drops were right around the August spam update.
