Yep, I've noticed that as well. During spam updates a lot of site owners reach out about drops, but mixed in have been more about manual actions. E.g. "Pure spam", "Thin content", etc. This is not shocking considering the amount of 'Scaled content abuse' going on. I have covered that heavily over...

The September 2026 spam update has completed rolling out. Nearly 14 days. Now the question becomes, what's next and when will that roll out? Again, based on the doc updates, and the heavy spamming going on to game AI Search, I think we'll see a very big update soon. Stay tuned.

Ah, just noticed there was a survey to fill out, and yep, Google is thinking about adding reporting for Preferred sources directly in GSC. That would be AWESOME. I made that clear in my responses. There were several questions about the importance of various aspects of the potential reporting... :)

Cloudflare CEO says if they block Google, it breaks search ranking (i.e. PageRank gets skewed since 20% of the web becomes invisible to Google). Note, Cloudflare switched to blocking Google by default on 9/15 so you should check your settings. www.youtube.com/watch?=4t8Rh...

But I cannot find any of those urls ranking in the SERPs now. So either Googles September spam update already hammered that directory or Google was displaying altered SERPs for all of the visibility tools. All three tools show the surge. An interesting case. Here is an example of what was captured.

More AI slamming the SERPs, but it might have gotten hit already with the spam update. Facebook Answers yields almost 6M urls indexed and looks to have surged like mad after the August spam update. And then surged heavily recently. But I cannot find any of those urls ranking in the SERPs.

I'm in an AIO test where the citations are stacked at the bottom of the answer on desktop. The right side citation bar is gone. And you can click 'Show all' to see a full list of citations at the bottom. IMO, those links look much more enticing down there. :)

XML sitemaps should contain all canonical urls and each url should contain an accurate lastmod date. I'm with Joost de Valk, many sites get this wrong. Back in the day I called them "dirty sitemaps". Now I just make sure clients understand what should be in those sitemaps and what should be left out

OK, Google finally nuked the shared notebook directory from the SERPs (which contained a ton of spam). They could have done this much sooner, but hey, better late than never. :) There were 16K+ urls indexed in that directory the last time I checked and it was increasing by thousands of urls per day.
